I have a one page paper in history due Monday on if we should or shouldn't end the embargo on Cuba...

What is everyone's opinions?

This will probably shock you, but I'm inclined to thinking that 40 years is just about long enough. I do have a problem with their politics, but then again, I also enjoy a good Cohiba every once in a while. Hell, it's a toss up...

Cuba poses no threat and we have a naval base at Guantanamo Bay so why starve innocent Children and other civilians?

Hey pal, we're not "starving" anyone...they're responsible for that, not us.

absolutely. its ridiculous how much energy is put into the FBI pesterng people who have travled there. apparently 3 times as many peole are allotted to the task as are assigned to terrorism.

I say end it. China's human rights record is much worse and we like them plenty. The only reason we treat those countries differently is 1) the large voting block of former Cubans in a state with lots of electoral votes and 2) China is too big of a market to ignore.

The embargo should be lifted. It should have happened 20 years ago or so. The Cubans would benefit and the U.S. would benefit.

It would have ended years ago if not for the political power of the Cuban immigrant community in Florida. If you want to win Florida, you have to support the embargo. Winning Florida is important to both political parties. Hence the embargo remains.

How did the Cubans vote in 2000? Did sending the Cuban boy back to Cuban hurt Gore?

I can't recall any specific figures, but in general the Cuban community has voted Republican. The biggest issue for many of them is maintaining the embargo. It was also during the Clinton Administration that travel restrictions were liberalized for those with family members in Cuba. It was also made possible to send funds to family members in Cuba. I'm not sure how much that helped the Democrats, but I will attemp to find out.
