View Full Version : The media paranoia

Last night (January 8) my sister and I were watching what I thought is the stupidest, most hating show on earth: Chappelle's Show. When it's over, we decided to watch Crank Yankers when we begin to browse the discovery channel-like channels.

There were a MILLION tsunami shows on so we watched one. By the end, I was forced to turn off the TV. Why?

Because I noticed that whenever something BIG happens in the world, the media begins to show a MILLION specials on it. I mean, before the tsunami thing, they rarely passed shows on Tsunamis. Before September 11th, they barely passed shows on terrorism and all that.

So I came up with the conclusion that it is just media paranoia. They're just trying to drive you more crazy than you already are...

(I may be wrong, though. Any thoughts?)

My thought is that you are not attuned to the economics of the media/infotainment industry.

The Media broadcasts whatever the viewing public have indicated they are interested in watching.

Hence the media frenzy over such inconsequential stories as the Lacy Peterson murder case, Ben Affleck's love life and whatever Paris Hilton happens to be doing.

reven,

This happens. With a twenty four hour news cycles and the pressure of keeping new stuff on the air, of course you are going to get a zillion specials on the tsunami disaster. Hell, The Learning, Discovery and History Channels all do specials whenever a new movie pops up.
