Muslim-American suing for workplace harassment
January 4, 2005 — A Muslim-American who formerly worked for a suburban Chicago manufacturer has filed a federal lawsuit, alleging he was fired after complaining of harassment.
Syed Abbas , a native of Pakistan, says a co-worker at A-F-I Industries Incorporated repeatedly called him a terrorist. The Carol Stream man also claims a supervisor drew a picture of him and labeled it a "wanted" poster.
Abbas worked as a machine operator for A-F-I for nearly nine years before he was fired in March 2003. He says he didn't have any problems before the September Eleventh terrorist attacks.
The lawsuit filed yesterday doesn't seek specific damages, but an attorney says Abbas wants compensation for emotional abuse and economic losses.
A spokesman for A-F-I, which makes screws and other fasteners, declined to comment.
