The best history I could ever read comes from the Bible. First hand accounts of things happening thousands of years ago, and then when they find other text confirming the bible (dead sea scrolls, text of Egypt). I take the bible as a literal history and record of human events..

The Bible is unreliable as a history book. No other history books say anything about a woman coming from a man's rib, a burning bush, or a flood that covered the entire Earth (there is not enough water on Earth for that to occur).

The first stories from the bible were passed along word of mouth generation to generation..Correct ?

There is some old adage about telling a joke to one person then having relayed back to you after passed along by ten.
So the story goes not the same joke or in this case the accuracy of the story recorded in the bible.

There is enough water on the planet right now to cover it all.....Ice is frozen water, On the year end science review they said that the way global warming is increasing, that you can already see stress on tons of ice, that when it splits and melts will raise sea levels by 16 feet.

Is Global warming Gods Wrath or the effects of human decisions?

I think that there was a layer of water around the earth and that is what flooded the earth during Noah's time. I think that is why people lived so long back then, because they didn't have the aging effects of the sun

I did a google search and found that there are at least two other ancient myths from the Middle East that exist which describe a giant flood. One is the Epic of Gilgamesh and the other is the story of Ziusudra who also builds an ark. These stories describe a similar cataclysmic event that happened 7000 - 8000 years ago in the Middle East.

About global warming being God's punishment.. I don't think it is. I just think that its the earths way of cleansing itself from all the pollution.

A scientific explanation for the great flood myths has been proposed, and there is evidence to support it. The Black Sea used to be a much smaller body of water during the last ice age, and was not connected to the Mediteranean Sea. As the glaciers melted, and the sea level rose, water spilled across what is now the Bosporous Straits. This raised the level of the Black Sea by several thousand feet in a matter of a few weeks. There were people living along the shores of the Black Sea at the time, and their villages were flooded suddenly. The survivors fled the cataclysm and went in various directions, including south into the mountains of Turkey, and southeast into what is now Iraq. Logically they told the stories of the great flood that had displaced them.
Robert Ballard discovered the remains of villages when he surveyed the area of the ancient shoreline of the Black Sea, now under thousands of feet of water. I don't have a handy reference for this, but I saw it on Nova on public television. I will look for a web reference, and post it later.

Here is the link that I promised earlier.

It is interesting, and the evidence is convincing that a flood occurred in the Black Sea. Undoubtedly the survivors would have spread the story.

Floods have happened, no question there. Earthquakes and volcanos have destroyed cities. There have been events where people thought dead were in comas and (came back to life) after misdiagnosis and before times of embalming of the dead.
The problems come in when these stories are turned around and used to magnify mans religions. To use a story to magnify a belief the subject must be bigger than life to express the miracles needed to gain a following. Sure there is some history in the Bible it was written long ago. It's the exagerations that are hard to swallow except by those willing.

Dan, that is a fair statement. I guess what it comes down to is, are you willing to entertain the thought that there may be a higher power? (I'm not trying to get into a nasty debate and I hope I didn't step on toes with that question, I was just curious!)

Thank you archergirl.

Yes, I believe in a higher power. No I do not believe in man made religions.

I'm sorry, but this makes absolutely no sense to me. First off, water refracts light but does not reflect it. Secondly, we REQUIRE the sun to produce certain vitamins we cannot find in food. Thirdly, without the sun, plants can't grow. Fourthly, water surrounds the Earth now anyway. They're called clouds. Fifthly, people could not have lived as long as they did, even assuming the sun was magically removed from the equation. It's not like everyone nowadays dies of skin cancer...

Imagineer...that is very interesting. Thanks for that link.

And just what do you know minister?

I wasn't implying that the sun was taken out of the equation. All I was saying was that there was a layer of water around the earth -- not that it blocked the sun. I also wasn't implying that everyone dies of skin cancer.

If you look at the importance of the ozone layer you'll see that it acts like a sunblock, filtering out the dangerous ultra-violet rays from the sun. Humans and animals exposed to excessive uv light can develop cancers (like you mentioned), their skin ages more quickly and their immune systems are reduced. (www.zephryus.demon.co.uk/geography/resources/environ/ozone.html)

So are you suggesting that we would be much healthier (and live for hundreds of years) if we spent our lives in a pitch-black closet?

archergirl

no, you're right, the sun is important for nutrients in our skin (and the endorphins that give us a sense of wellbeing). The aging effects have more to do with the harmful effects of uv rays, not sunshine. all I was saying was that they lived longer because they were protected from uv rays, and not that they lived in darkness.

Water does not protect from UV rays. If it did, no one would bother to wear sunscreen at the beach or pool, they would merely make sure they stayed damp while they were outside.

If you stay under the water with enough above you, uv rays will not affect you.

But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.

For it is not ye that speak, but the spirit of your father wich speaketh in you. Matthew 10:19-20

And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved. Matthew 10:22

Hmm...are you saying you are speaking with the spirit of God?

Nice persecution complex you've got going there minister...I think though, that you are overstating things a bit if you feel you've been subjected to "hate" from anyone here.
