That most people just believe in god because they're afraid of going to hell.
So really, people just believe in god to save their own rear ends. This seems less than noble to me.
What if this life is the only one you get... I would enjoy it now. To be afraid of some invisible man in the sky seems foolish.

also,
it seems as though god talked to us a lot more 2000 years ago.
if i were to tell you that god talked to me, you'd call me crazy... perhaps the people who "talked" to god had some screws loose.
after all, ergot poisoning was not uncommon at the time.

That is the whole basis of religion. To control the masses. What better way to control what people do than to threaten them. And if you question it or go against it's teachings then you will spend eternity burning in hell. Fear is a very strong motivator, especially when it has been indocrinated into you since birth.

Ever wonder why most religious people know very little about other religions? Because they are taught not to guestion god, it is a sin. So basically if you research all the religions in the world so that you can make an educated choice, you will be commiting a sin in the religion you were raised i. A very nice way to keep people ignorant.

Better to live a good life for the mere sake of leading a good life. Be true to yourself and listen to your conscience.

Living your life a certain way out of fear of what will happen after you die is stupid.

People don't believe just to get out of Hell.....because that isnt enough.....they pretend to be saved to stay out of Hell.

They use Christianity as a fire escape.

God is smarter than you give him credit for. That's why you have to be sincere in your acceptance of him to get into Heaven.

Another guestion...

Obviosly gb is a pretty religious man. He says god talks to him. (whatever). However he doesn't act like he believes in christian doctrine. His actions actually go very against christian doctrine.

There are many religious people who fully accept god and jesus as their savior but treat other humans on this earth like shit. Their actions do not match the doctrine of the christian teachings.

I do hope that they end up in heaven because we don't want them in hell spoiling all our fun.

Kid hypocrite - if you put it on the web, it's fair game, and becomes my business if I choose to comment on it.

I'm sure he is.

mikeydafish - I think you hit the nail on the head. The not going to hell thing is a big part of it - and then the other part is the getting together with other like minded folk and pretending like you have some real friends.

One time is sufficient. Repetition makes you seem old and tired (pun intended)

You know like when you say kid over and over?

I've been breathing a good thirty years longer than you. Yeah, I run out of steam more quickly than I used to, and an afternoon nap is often called for on a day off. No real surprises there. Unlike you, I make no excuses for my attitudes or behaviors. They're mine & I own them.

Look.....I really have no problem with your age.......if youre going to keep sarcastically calling me for kid for some reason.....then maybe youre not as much an adult as I thought.

"kid" could accidentally be mistaken as a term of endearment in some cases.....

A kid could also be a baby goat :D

It was amazing how many folks I talked to after 911 that joined the church, they said the same thing, better to be safe then sorry.

I wonder how many are going to join now with all of the waves and folds?

I believe in a higher power, God/gods, but I don't believe in hell so I highly doubt I'm trying to save my rear end. I think you are thinking about one religion not all.
