Robbery suspect locks keys in car across from police station
December 24, 2004 (Lake Station, Ind.) — Lake Station police say a 26-year-old man locked his keys in his car while robbing a convenience store across the street from the police department.
Police say Dan Griggs of Gary returned to the store after walking out with three cartons of cigarettes he didn't pay for Tuesday morning.
Police say he broke into the lottery machine and stole 50-dollars, then went back outside.
He returned again and grabbed a broom.
As dispatchers watched from the police station, Griggs used the broom to smash a window on his vehicle.
He led police on a short chase through snowy streets and hit a police car head-on. He ran, but was arrested when he got stuck in a ditch.
Griggs was identified by the clerk and is being held without bond on a robbery charge. <end>
