there is a delta sonic car wash near my job, and there is a supermarket on the other side of my job....now here's the story. delta sonic promises to keep their gas prices 2 cents lower than the lowest gas price within a mile. the market just put a gas station in their lot, and they have the same guarantee....all week long they've been battling. now, here in ny state, gas is 209 a gal. well, the 2 battling gas stations are now down to 160 a gallon, and dropping.................if they can do that, stands to reason that we've been taken to the cleaners by all gas dealers, because this proves that the prices just dont have to be that high.............and, its a bipartisan screwing

Ahhhh, a gas war. Long time since I have heard of one of those.
Sure we have been screwed by the fuel companies, and I might add, with the blessing of our governments.

As a young man I personally saw gas wars get as low as 25 cents a gallon.

Not necessarily - they might be willing to take a short term loss on the product to generate other business or just to drive the other guys out of business. For instance, most gas stations regularly sell milk for less than it costs them to get people to buy gas and to get people in the store, where they might buy other stuff.

Gas wars. What a blast from the past. That brings back memories of "full service", something almost unheard of today. Lowest I ever paid was $0.189/gallon for premium. Normally the price was .299 for reg or .319 for premium, all leaded gas.

Taxes on gas should be raised not lowered, even in California. Higher gas prices will induce the market to begin to develop consumer electric-powered and hydrogen-powered automobiles, whichever proves most cost-efficient.

Agreed, it's a voluntary tax. Also, it punishes the drivers that pollute the environment the most, along with the other evils and costs associated with driving a lot. As Borg pointed out, it would encourage the development of alternate sources of fuel, too. Gas tax is actually a great tax.

And this post is probably from the most anti-tax poster on this board.

They're losing money. Both of them. I've had clients in the C-Store business. People are creatures of habbit and the C-Store owners try to get people into the habbit of stopping in their store.

Three or four weeks of low gas prices usually does the trick. Then they'll start colluding like the rest of the C stores do.

Two other points... the government makes a shitload off of gas taxes.

AND, if you hate the evil oil companies so much, STOP BUYING GAS.
