donno i've just picked it up from all the movies & TV progs i watch which are obviously mostly american!
Everytime theres a black bloke or gal they're always with another black person, never really see any inter-racial stuff, same for chat shows ricki lake etc
Another thing i gotta add which does my head in movies... why is that everytime a black person is on screen with a white person he always has to make fun of the white person with stuff like.... 'oh white people can't dance' or 'White people can't jump' etc I was watching Dogma a few days ago its a comedy about the lord etc and Chris Rock came into halfway through preaching about how Jesus was black & not white just made me wanna say shut the f@*k up. lol not cos i dont agree but because every black person just says it ALL the bloody time!
Anywayz from what i sense in the US white and black people are very separtaed and not really as mingled as over here in the UK
another thing that cements this idea in my mind... is the story about Craig David... a successfull UK RnB artist who's mixed raced.. well he went over to the US and in his first music video he did for over there they added some extra tan/make up to him just to add a lil more blackness to his skin and when he was gonna do sum live shows over there his US label advised him to change one of his live guitar players because he was white!! they wanted to change him to a black dude!! Good on Craig David for sticking to his guns and being loyal by sticking with the white dude! The label said it would be better for his image over there and help sell more etc
My english is rubbish i know, but i dont care lol

I quite feel the same. I always wonder in TV progs why people are always dating people from the same "community" (even the word "community" seems so important in the USA). There may be exceptions but they are scarce !
Most of the people I know in France who are from african or asian origin date (or have married) people from other origins.

You guys all have to keep in mind that the countries you all are from have been around probably for Thousands of years. The culture you all were raised in leaves room for open minded thought because you all have very deep rooted beliefs that have been passed down from generation to generation for centuries
The United States on the other hand, in comparison with the rest of the world" is very young in origin. Its only around 400 years old. Thats nothing compaired to some of the european nations that have been around since Celtic times. The US is very much a "Melting Pot" for people from almost every race, creed, and color on this planet. This unfortunately tends to cause problems in some areas due to culture clashes and political beliefs that don't immediately tend to blend in with each other.
A good example is when I lived in europe, I was sorta shocked to see women on the beach sun bathing bare breasted in front of entire crowds of people and no one made a fuss about it. (Some of these women were extremely well endowed too). Here in the US, if a woman were to do this, she's be arrested in a heartbeat and the local media would have a field day with it.
To make a long story very short. America is still culturally in its infancy when compared to the rest of the world, and with time our great "Melting Pot" will eventually melt down all of our cultural, racial and religious fears and beliefs to the point where we will all become one people all in the same state of mind!
We still have a long way to go... but we'll eventually get there!!

That reminds me of that budweiser advert we used to get over here... it starts off with two american guys on the beach and this really atractive lady walks past in a bikini and one guy says to the other 'u know in europe they go around topess' which the other guy is impressed with.
Then it moves to a italian beach where two guys are chilling out and this really overweight woman is walking past topless, with erm not the best assits, then one of the guy says to the other 'u do know in america its against the law to take your top off'
lol sorry its more funny when you watch it i guess?

The degree and acceptance of racial relationships variess greatly with geographic area in the US.
In one area it may be totally accepted and in another area it may get someone killed.
In my town, racial relationships are everywhere and that is not an exxageration. It is not unusual to see blacks, whites, hispanics and asians in relationships of all combinations with no particular combination standing out. There are just as many of combination A as there are of combination B etc etc etc.
As far as your chris rock remark ... racial rhetoric, some being borderline slurs, is a cottage industry in the entertainment business. That's just a fact of life here in the states. I don't like it either and like most sane people, I simply tune it out.
Welcome to the forums BTW

Hey there ! Craig David is a great artist . I like his music a lot but I wasn't aware of this issue about his skin color or his band member. Anyway, thisngs like that are not very publicized either.
I do on the other hand agree with Dunkirk, he is absoutly correct on the US. We are realitivly young compared to the UK and other countries. We are also a conservative country and that I think is based on the fact our founding Fathers of this country came here for religious reasons and it still stays true to this day.
Awesome MAn, don't let what you see on TV hinder you from coming to the US for a visit it is a great country !

I think on TV and movies they keep everyone in their own group so that they don't have to worry about getting complaints from screwballs. In real life, I see interracial couples all of the time. I wouldn't say it's common, but one sees it often enough that it doesn't strike you as unusual anymore.

I guess it really depends on which part of the nation you are in, as to how common interracial couples are. Here in Virginia, they are very common.

I have noticed in the last 5 yrs I have seen a huge increase in inter racial couples. I am in a town in Louisiana that is perdominatly white but I have seen the increase here too. I am about 10 miles from Baton Rouge and its not uncommon there at all .

believe it or not, you'd be amazed how narrow-minded people in new orleans are!!
i'm white, my husband's black, and our children are biracial. he's from chicago (much more open-minded there), and he can't stand the looks we still get when we go anywhere. and if i take my boys out by myself, people look at me as if i took someone else's child. i've even had people come up and ask, "oh, are your boys hispanic?" i want to twist their stupid little heads off.
p.s. about the chris rock thing:
yes, black comics often take away from themselves when they start in on ragging white people (when that's 90% of what their act is). but, my friend, jesus did not have blonde hair and blue eyes. he was from the middle eastern/ northern africa region. don't see many "white people" out there. the bible even describes him as having skin of brass and hair of lamb's wool.

I think its more polictically correct for black people to make fun of white people than the other way around. If a white comedian made fun of black folk, it would bring down disasterous consequences on that comedian. You'll know the day racism has died when people can openly talk about other races without malice give or recieved.
In regards to inter-racial dating, I did date a woman from India, it's pretty common where I live as well. I think we'll see more of it, and less racism. It's hard to make fun of a certain group of people when you have relatives that are in that group.

i've done my part. i urge everyone else to do theirs. encourage everyone you know to "blend"; it'll be really hard to discriminate if something like that happens!!

Well, I don't think you need to encourage anyone to "blend".
I mean, I wouldn't marry a black woman just because she's black. I fell in love with my wife regardless her race. If she would have been black or asian or any other race, I wouldn't have cared, but I am not going to conduct my life to make a political statement.
Actually, I fell in love regardless her religion. For my parents and family, it was better if I would marry a Catholic (I guess they wanted Catholic grand-children), but I told them it's my life and I don't care about her religion (also I don't care much about the Catholic Church anyway). They accepted the situation (I guess too that they are more open-minded that they want to admit hehehe) and now they always ask a lot of questions about her religion and traditions (she's Presbitirian by the way).

Fer crying out loud Jennygadling, you and hubby still get stares? And in New Orleans? I always thought NO was a cool place ... guess I misjudged that one.
Get the heck outta there - move to California where we do the blend (sounds like a dance) better than anyplace.
And tell them New Orleans red necks (or whatever they are) the 60's are over.

hey dop, call me jenny; that's a whole lot of typing!!
and yes, believe it or not, in a city that revolves around sex and partying and all, we still get stares. as soon as i graduate, we're out of here. i do all i can to make sure my boys grow up knowing both sides of their heritage. we want them to be proud of their past, present, and future. new orleans is a cool place to party; a horrible place to raise a family or to teach family values. my hubby and i were both stationed in cali before we had kids (i was in alameda, he was in lemoore); it was pretty nice. when we were up at great lakes (chicago area), it was nice, too.
honestly, it can be pretty funny to see people make total asses out of themselves!!
