This is something that I've always wondered. More and more people each year spell Christmas by crossing out Christ name with an "X".

Anyone know why this is?

I hope my answer is ok by the powers that be........but it is simply to take Christ out of the Holiday. It is to cover up the real meaning of Christmas, and coat it with lies.

exactly..

or, I just don't like to type it all out.

Here is my understanding of it:
X, the inverted cross, was sometimes used by Medieval book printers (especially the followers of Martin Luther and those who printed his Bible translation) to represent the word Christ. It has now become somewhat of a different issue. The inverted cross has somehow come to mean "antichrist", and many religious fundamentalists believe that spelling Christmas X-mas is sacriligious.

If I'm wrong about any of this, let me know.

I did a google search for "origins of xmas" and there were many hits. The article I selected is the most popular opinion of the 5 or so sites I visited.

Basically what Dark said. :)

Yeah, it's not us horrible satanists trying to murder babies and rip out Jesus' heart. DarkFantasy just beat me to the punch... The reason it is usually used now is because it's a hell of a lot shorter to write xmas than Christmas. That's certainly why it's written on our boxes for Christmas.

I hope my answer is ok by the powers that be
What's that mean? So horrible that you get proven wrong?

Ouch. Jere, you just got proven wrong about ten times over. Care to apologize to us godless heathens who are trying to take over your holiday? :D

Care to apologize? Hardly.

So the explanation for "x"mas is because Christ takes too long to write??? Um, yeah, ok.....

Do you type Xian for Christian? Do you write Xtina for Christina? Xopher for Christopher?

We don't. We also write "Christmas". Also, if we're trying to remove christ's name, why aren't we saying Xian?

To me, any way you look at it, its still rather strange

I myself just feel better by writing out the whole name... "Christmas"

Um, no, it isn't. Read what Dark Fantasy said:

Do you type Xian for Christian?
I do sometimes when referring to fundamentalist jackass Christian-Coalition-type jackasses, as something of an insult.
Do you write Xtina for Christina?
I believe Xtina is Christina Aguilera's nickname.
Xopher for Christopher?
Can't say that I've ever done this. Then again, it sounds (and looks) ridiculous, in fact, it nearly looks like "gopher".

People are lazy these days.
So, instead of murdering our hands by writing Christmas, we just do Xmas.

at one time, I do believe you would have been correct. Now I believe folks use it as a shortcut.

It is to cover up the real meaning of Christmas, and coat it with lies.

The real meaning of Christmas(this time of year) now that is a big topic. Chances are Christ was not born at this time he would have been born during the warmer months. The real time of this holliday was from the 21-23{dec} and it was called winter solstice. The Christians decided to use this time of year so that it would be easier to convert the so called heathens. So who really is coating things with lies? Be very carefull of dates when trying to make your religion the one truth.

As we use SMS for short massaging Service i Think so is it with the X'mas. It's a short and more mordnise form of writing and saying it.

Helpful:

Similarly, the name Christ has for a thousand years been abbreviated as X, which is not the Roman letter "eks," but the Greek letter "chi," standing for the first letter of Christ when written in Greek as "Christos" (as transcribed into Roman letters). Some of the words using this abbreviation are X, Xp (Greek chi-rho, or "Chr"), and Xt for "Christ," Xren for "christen," and Xtian for "Christian."

Very interesting....... (Too bad he only posted 1 time)

but it is simply to take Christ out of the Holiday. It is to cover up the real meaning of Christmas, and coat it with lies.I have always wondered why people call it Xmas .. I didnt realize this may be the reason behind it..... (Why are other groups so offended by CHRISTS mention??)

They dont have to believe in CHRIST but they shouldnt discourage others from using his name should they choose to!

well...i dont know about any of you, but i was tought to always write out Christmas. and i do. i never put "x-mas" because i realized it was crossing out Christ. i never knew or cared WHY it was crossing it out, but that it just was and that i wouldnt do it. even though i dont really read the bible or go to church, i believe in God, was raised a Christian, and see it as disrespectful for ME to be doing it. if youre an athiest or whatever, X all you want.

People are getting lazier and lazier, plain and simple. We live in a world where everything is either IMed or text messaged and kept short.

Now,for another question......what's with the dredging up of really old threads?

Sarcasm Aside.. the secularists ARE trying, and succeeding, in a military takeover of Christmas. They are United States, Christmas is Iraq lol. Strange that most who are for taking God out of a religious holiday are also against this Iraq War.

What in the bleeding fuck are you blathering about? What "military takeover"? What "secularists"? And even were this "military takeover" an actual event as opposed to some fictional struggle going on in your head, have you forgotten that Christmas is originally a pagan holiday?

Not to mention that Christmas is pretty much universally celebrated in this country, by believers and non-believers alike.

Look up the Yule holiday. It predates Christianity, is also celebrated on December 25, and its traditions include hanging mistletoe and holly, and giving gifts.

Christ wouldn't be born in December.

The celebration of Jesus Christ's birthday was Pagan?
Not just his birth, but his death too. Easter was rooted solidly in springtime pagan celebrations.

A big strategy of the blossoming Catholic Church's to convert the heathens was to co-opt pagan idolatry with Christian symbols. All of the pagan gods became angels, all the pagan holidays became Christian holidays, and so on.

You really should learn more about this religion that you are basing your whole life around observing.
