I have a Frozen Young Duck thats been sitting in the back of my freezer now for about the past three years. This thing is frozen rock solid and has never been thawed. Do you think its safe to finally thaw it out and roast it, or should it be tossed. I can remember reading somewhere that bacteria cannot either form or spread on meat thats been frozen, but I don't know if this info can be completely trusted or not. What would you do, thaw it out and roast it, or toss it into the trash?

I think mr. duck needs to go away, not to the roasting pan, but straight to the dumpster.

f the duck has been sitting there for 3 years, I sure wouldn't trust eating it. Just out of curiousity, how come it has been there so long and never aten quite awhile ago?

if you are brave then cook it up, but I just don't think he will reach his full flavor potential after that period of time........

Thanks everyone

This " duck" has been sitting in the back of my fridge buried under everything else for so long that I practically forgot it was even back there. I really think it wise that I take all of your adivce on this matter and sent my little ducky straight to the trash compactor!

Thanks again :)

I heard somewhere that you should only keep frozen foods for about 6 months. I dont remember where I heard that though, or if it's correct.

It's probably safe, but it would be very dry. Frozen foods lose moisture through sublimation. This is assuming that the freezer has been kept at a temperature of zero degrees farenheit or lower. I know this because I spent a year in the Army some years ago inspecting mess halls, including proper food handling practices.

Well guys..

I origionally planned to trash "daffy", but curiosity got the best of me and I decided to thaw it out and roast him anyway just to see how it would taste. After well seasoning him and leaving him in the oven till he was a golden brown, I sliced off a small piece of him, took one bite, grabbed a paper towel and removed the contents from my mouth, and tossed his carcass straight to the trash :o

always remember that bacteria does not stop growing in a freezer, it merely slows down. You would have to be the first person to reach absolute zero to stop all molecular actionl.

Oh I hate leaving food in the freezer too long. It makes me feel stupid about buying it in the first place. I make it a point to check freezer every month and either cook up older stuff or discard.

My dad gave some sausage to my aunt at the lake...she cooked it up and said it smelt funny...oddly enough it had been dated 1992!!!
