I just read that Arafat has died.

May peace come to the middle east now that the noble peace prize winner has gone to claim his 72 virgins.

The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.

Either way I don't think he is alive... I think they are trying to come up with ways to control whatever situation may arise from his death.

When he is dead, the power struggle will begin but if someone tries to take power and Arafat comes back then that someone will be in big trouble.

first bush wins re election, then the GOP increases its majority in the house and senate, now Yasser Arafat, the granfather of all terrorists, is at deaths door. now all we need is for Bin Laden and Al Sadr to make a visit to allah and we will be on our way to a better world.

The sad thing is that it probably isn't good. With the death of Arafat, we have the death of probably the last semi moderate muslim leader. Our standing in the international community sucks, the only kind of person that the palestanians will end up calling to will be a militant dangerous one. This isn't the start of peace, it's the end of it. The middle east has been relatively peaceful, a carbomb here, bulldoze there, but nothing that bad. Ariel Sharon is still alive, I have one last thing to say: we're fucked.

Jesus.

Thats such a horrible thing to say. Obviously, he hasnt been the greatest person to ever live, but we shouldnt wish him off to hell.

Hell is supposed to be a pretty bad place, no? IMHO, that kind of place is reserved for the most despicable of spirits, the most dastardly individuals. He won the Nobel for what? Did anything really change? Yeah, it got worse, yet he kept it under watch. Well folks, he just ain't there no more - regardless if he's breathing as this is written or not. Turn the page.

Youre right, and I understand.

We shouldnt wish Hell on anyone, we should hope that God shows them the errors of their way before its too late. And maybe something will good will come out of all this.

"He is dead, but neither Arafat's wife nor the Palestinian leadership is ready to announce this," a PA official said. "The announcement could take place on Friday."

The problem is that Arafat is still the only Palestinian official who can pay the bills. And it is unclear who, if anyone, has access to the estimated $2-3 billion in his personal Swiss bank accounts, according to a report in the current edition of Geostrategy-Direct.com. Even his wife is said to be unaware of how to access the funds.

Arafat continues to hold the purse strings to the Palestinian finances. For the last decade, he has been the final, and often only word on payment to everybody from the suicide bomber to the janitor. Not a dime was paid without Arafat's okay.

The United States has been supporting former PA security chief Mohammed Dahlan as Arafat's successor. To his friends in the Bush administration, Dahlan, 43, has all the qualities for Arab leadership: a smooth talker and brutal cop. Arafat asked Dahlan to accompany him to Paris in a move designed to keep him out of the Gaza Strip and any coup plot.

The fact that Arafat won a Nobel peace prize is an absolute travesty. Not to wish a sick man ill-will, but Arafat is a hard core terrorist that never had a single interest in peace.

His removal from the scene can only be a positive.

I think now that Arafat dying is an incredible oppurtunity to establish stability with the paledtinians, and i think it's a really good oppurtunity to jump headfirst into the peace process- the actualzation of it, not the talking. lets just hope that everyone involved is willing to mkae the leap.

I agree - there are obviously Palestinians that long for peace. Now Arafat - the Grandfather of Islamic terrorism is out of the picture a major obstacle has been removed.
