Political Observers Say Jiang Zemin Should Retire
China・s state-run CCTV recently broadcast an exclusive interview with Deng Xiaoping's family that described the late Chinese leader・s retirement life. Several commentators believe this indicates that the current Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party・s Military Committee, Jiang Zemin, should retire.
Deng Xiaoping's sister, Deng Xianqun, his eldest daughter, Deng Lin and his granddaughter, Deng Mianmian were interviewed by CCTV's program, :News Greeting Room.; They mentioned that Deng Xiaoping was whole-heartedly a normal civilian after his retirement. A photo published on Xinhua Net shows Deng Xiaoping meeting Norway's Prime Minister at the time, Dr. Brundtland. According to the caption, Deng Xiaoping says, :I am 84 years old this year, I should retire.;
Hong Kong's Wenwei also reported the interview with Deng Xiaoping's family, and quoted Deng Ning as saying that Deng Xiaoping believed he should trust young leaders, and let them temper themselves and grow, since he passed the work to them.
Hong Kong's Apple Daily newspaper columnist Zhang Hua said all signs indicate Jiang Zemin's strong determination to stay in power. Zhang believes no one in the CCP can force Jiang to step down.
But, many believe the TV interview is using the opinions of the dead to influence the living, or, in other words, to influence Jiang to give up his military power.
Hong Kong political commentator Li Yi said in his column that Jiang not only controls the military, but also has the last word in putting national policy into law.
During an interview with Radio Free Asia, former CCP general secretary Hu Jiangbang・s assistant Lin Mu said that Jiang Zemin is the stumbling block of history. He said Jiang should not only retire, but also cannot interfere with policy after retirement. Otherwise two centers of leadership will make it difficult for China to advance. Although Jiang tried very hard to stay in power, voices inside the Party requesting his retirement are stronger and stronger. Lin Mu also criticized Jiang, saying he does not care about national interest and that his staying in power is only for his own interest.
