Elderly Man Dies in Front of Supreme Court

On August 17, Wang Shunyuan・s body was discovered at 3:00 a.m. By 9 a.m., the elderly Gansu province man・s corpse still lay in front of the Appeals Office of Beijing・s Supreme People's Court. People who had gathered to appeal in front of the office called police many times, but the police did not come. Eventually, hundreds of people were enraged by the neglect and discussed whether to stage a march with Wang Shunyuan・s body.

The dead man had a terrible facial expression. His face was blue, and his eyes and mouth wide open. The crowd who saw the body said that he looked like he was yelling. The decomposing body had begun to smell of decay.

Rather than racing to the courthouse, police asked callers to identify the body. But the crowd feared opening the old man・s belongings. They said, :The policemen are crazy. Even if you do not do anything wrong, they will accuse you of wrongdoing. So we dare not go into his things.; Finally, someone took out Wang・s ID card while the crowd acted as witnesses.

The ID card indicated that Wang was from Baiyun city in Gansu province and that he was 59 years old. His date of birth was September 5, 1945.

Another Gansu province resident recognized the name and said that Wang Yuanshun had appealed for 10 years. Reportedly, Wang・s son had died due to punishment after being falsely charged with a crime. Wang went to the Office of Appeals in the State Council of the People's Republic of China. The State Council told him to go to the Office of Appeals in the National People・s Congress, but the National People・s Congress asked him to go to the Supreme Court. People there said that the old man waited in front of the Supreme Court almost every day, but the Supreme Court never called his name.

According to the crowd who witnessed the scene, the old man・s wife left the Supreme Court at about 8 a.m. With a Gansu dialect and hand gestures, she told people on the spot that her husband had waited to be called by the Supreme Court the day before his body was found. After he heard his name called, he went into the reception room. A policeman said, :Why do you come in? We didn・t call you!; Then, they pushed him out of the Supreme Court. The old man fell down and died just outside the Supreme Court.

Witnesses say two policemen in the Supreme Court came out immediately. They refused to let his wife talk. Instead, they took away Wang・s package and the materials inside. Then, they quickly brought the woman inside the Supreme Court building.
Witnesses estimate that the death occurred before 5:00 p.m. when the policemen of the Supreme Court went off duty, and that the body of the old man had been left for almost 20 hours. Yet the Supreme Court police who had direct responsibility for the incident took Wang・s wife into custody and took the related materials from her. The police who should be responsible for recording the case apparently never showed up at all.
People waiting to appeal believe that Wang・s wife is in danger because she is a witness to the crime. They discussed whether they should take the body of the old man to the streets to make this injustice known.

They say the Supreme Court police also beat a woman from southern China and pushed her out of the courthouse door.
The people on site sighed: :Even robust and strong men dare not to go to the two main Offices to appeal (the Office of Appeals in State Council of the People's Republic of China and the Office of Appeals in National People・s Congress). Yet this old man didn・t die at either of these two main offices but here at the Supreme Court!;

By 11:30 a.m., The Epoch Times learned that Wang Yuanshun・s body was still lying in front of the Supreme Court gate. The crowd gathered to appeal there covered his body with some leaves and grass. Nonetheless, the body・s stench was becoming unbearable. Wang・s wife, now distraught and absentminded, had been released and was staying beside the body. The police were surrounding her. Around 12:20 p.m., police finally removed Wang・s body. The crowd responded by shouting and posting slogans to protest the violence of the Supreme Court policemen. The situation grew tense as police vans surrounded the area.
An appellant from Jilin Province speculated about Wang・s fate, :He probably was beaten to death by the police. There are black and blue marks on his back near the ribs area. There are also bruises around his neck, like he was being choked. The policemen inside the Supreme Court beat all people like this. They beat people inside. When they・re finished, they just push you out of there by gripping your neck.;

Wang・s wife was reportedly in a daze and unable to speak with an Epoch Times reporter by phone.

An appellant and former policeman, Li Guozhu, from Heilongjiang province said, :We have also verified the cause of the death. His body had many wounds, and there was the mark of a rope around his neck. Yesterday he was kicked out by the Supreme People・s Court, and wheeled just outside the door. He didn・t pass away until about 3 a.m. today. He died of his injuries; definitely persecuted to death by the police, but it・s not clear which policeman is responsible.

After leaving the scene, an appellant from Liaoning province described Wang Yuanshun・s back as red from beating. At the scene, there were many people shouting slogans, surrounded by police vehicles.

According to Beijing rights defender, Ye Guozhu, cases like Wang・s are common. :Perhaps we have gotten used to it, and became numb to them. Often times, we see an old appellant starved to death under the bridge or someone laying on the railroad tracks to commit suicide. The police put it aside as a matter of no consequence.;
