Recently, I had a minor traffic accident. I veered off the road and became stuck in the ditch. The police officer who responded said he had to give me a ticket for reckless driving. He asked me to sit in the front seat of his car while he completed the paperwork. He also called a tow truck. He told me that he would take me to the police station where I could call someone to come get me. When the paperwork was finished, he gave me the ticket to sign and I did. He then told me that I would have to ride in the backseat to the police station. He informed me to get out and he would come around and unlock the rear door. I did and he came around to where I was standing. He said that since I would be riding in a police car, he would have to handcuff me as departmental policy required all people riding in a police car to be handcuffed. I put my hands out in front to be handcuffed. He said that he had to handcuff me behind my back as departmental policy allowed only behind the back handcuffing. I put my hands behind me and he handcuffed them. Once I got to the police station, he escorted me inside where he removed the handcuffs. My question is were the handcuffs really necessary? Did he have to handcuff me behind my back? Is this common practice? Your thoughts are welcome.

Maybe this was all part of the all-new Candid Camera: S&M TV show? :D

I only thought they could hand cuff you when you were getting arrested. Did you get arrested?

In Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, my neck of the woods, they actually handcuffed a 95-year-old woman and brought her to jail for an outstanding traffic citation.

There was so much outrage that they are reevaluating their policy about using handcuffs.

Honestly speaking, if they were not arresting me I would have just used my cell phone to call someone to pick me up. If i didnt have a cell phone i would have walked to the nearest pay phone. This sounds like maybe you didnt tell us the whole story. WERE you arrested?

There is no way in hell i would allow anyone to ever put me in handcuffs unless i did something to deserve to be put in them for. (i.e. serious offense requiring restraint.)

For the safety of the officer, they cannot alow you to ride in the car uncuffed. It is standard practice. You should have called for a ride or asked him to call someone for you. Unless you were under arrest there was really no reason for you to go to the police station.

In Europe you are cuffed depending on several factors. Social background and skin colour being the big 2, I hear in the US it is worse. Is that correct ?

People join the Police because of the nice salary and job security, the ones who do it to catch the bad guys are few and far between. I believe it should be a vocation rather than a well paid job - attracts the wrong type in my experience!

Never been cuffed for any reason. Have never been arrested. Haven't spoken to a cop that had any official interest in me - other than a driver's liscense or seatbelt check in about 20 years.

Sometimes they're just following procedure and other times they're over the top living in their own personal Kojak world enjoying every minute of harrassing the public.

It's hard to tell the difference.
