The moderate liberal Republican Senator Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island said he will most likely not be voting for Bush in the upcoming election. Chafee represents the dying breed of socially progressive, fiscally moderate Republicans that used to be foundation of the GOP. Since Kerry will most likely win RI, he said he will probably write in a candidate. He has entertained the idea of switching parties.

The Republican said the party's direction in the future will determine his political career as well. He said he's "not OK" with the conservative platform from the Republican convention, but would not say if he'd consider switching parties in his next election in 2006.

If we can get the moderate republicans to switch, not only will it give our party more seats, it will defenitly inprove our standing with independents.

He should switch to the Libertarians, not the democrats.

He isn't really libertarian material. His positions are more along the line of Howard Dean democrats (very liberal on social issues, moderate on fiscal issues.) He is not fiscally conservative enough to be a libertarian and he is a strong supporter of gun control.

its funny how the dems have to rely on defectors to take back the senate instead of the voters.

Didn't the republicans regain Senate control because of a defector?

no, that was the democrats, with old Jumping Jim Jeffords, who left the republican party to be independent, bt votes with the dems all the time. republicans regained it through the voters in 2002. I am sure at somepoint in the past it may have happened, but not recently.

Jeese trav - ever ask yourself why so many republicans are defecting?

BECAUSE THE REPUBLICAN PARTY HAS GONE FROM BEING CONSERVATIVE TO BEING FASCIST IN ITS LEANINGS.

People do not leave something that is working for them.

Both parties have moved to the right in the last 30 years. The democrats are more middle of the road and the repoublicans have become far right fanaticals.

Echo does have a point, and that is the fact that the Republicans have indeed changed. They used to be a party of socially libertarian, fiscally responsible, small-goverment. They have become, with the "Age of the Neo-Con", as I call it, big-spenders though they use voodoo economics to try to pay for their spending. Ironically, the Democrats now seem to be the more fiscally responsible party now. "Trickle-down economics" DOES NOT WORK.

The GOP caters far more to the Religious Right now, as well. They've become the party of bad economics and religious bigotry. It's a shame, really.
