So, at what point does it stop being "searching for diseases such as AIDS" to "Oh, I want my babyt to have blue eyes, make him have blue eyes."? Where do you draw the line?

You dont even consider the line is what you do.
Chemical Engineering is just wrong plain and simple.

Did you mean genetic and biomedical engineering? Because the main function for chemical engineers is to develop new technology for the large production of chemicals and to manufacture industrial products through chemical processes. They don't do much for human biological purposes.

So would you rather no technology be developed to aid in the prevention of deadly or debilitating diseases just because of fear that some people might abuse the system for their own frivolous desires. Systems set up to help people are abused everyday, look at welfare. jerejerebinks is right, "the line is what you do." That is why there are government regulations on the use and development of such technologies that might lead to the implementation of unethical practices by some individuals. It sucks to be a scientist bound by such restrictions, but at the same time, be glad that such unethical activities cannot take place.

Lol, yeah, I was talking specifically about the engineering of children.

Wow, Lionel...death huh? Gee, that's pretty harsh for a simple phrase.

Bad, bad, and bad. Although it is hard to stop the progress of science on the grounds of ethics, this is one area that should be left up to mother nature, and mother nature alone.
