I've often considered the ability to think of more things than once. By this I mean the ability to resolve two problems at the exact same time. This of course is very farfetched. However I got to thinking that our inability to concentrate on multiple problems is what makes us individuals. If my brain where figuring two mathmatically problems at the exact same time then which one would "I" be figuring???:@@: ??? Maybe this is the uniqueness of being an individual. Humans continually attempt to creat AI(if you dont know what AI is then go away). Trully the AI being would just be a machine with features that give in the appearance of an individual. However as long as this being is splitting its thought on billions of tasks then it cant be an individual as we percieve being an individual. Thats not to say that all life must only be capable of concentrating on a single thought to be considered a true being.
It is a common, to common, missconception of humans to only view life if it is similiar to life on earth. Perhaps there are beings around and about that are made of chemicals that we might consider inanimate.
Who knows that first time humans discover life we might step over it because it is so foriegn in compisition for us, how could it possibly be alive.
