007 here. I have a new DSL connection. I love the speed, however, I need to hook two computers up to the DSL.

My primary system is running Windows XP Pro. 800 megahertz Pentium III processor. 384 meg of Ram (of a possible 512). I have an external DSL modem. Instead of putting a ethernet card in this system and using an external router, I installed a router card (PCI) which can hook upto 4 computers in addition to the server that it resides in. two 40 gig hard drives, cd burner, dvd drive. The unit is a HP 754XL.

The other computer is much less of a machine. It has a 233 megahertz pentium II processor. Ram is at 128 meg. Operating system is Windows 98se. It is a IBM thinkpad 770. It also has an IBM ethernet card and a catagory 5 cable to hook to the router card in the other computer. external floppy and and internal swappable drive which is currently a dvd drive.

The router card is currently only being used for the primary computer (server, I suppose) this way I don't have to purchase an addtional ethernet card for this system.

Does the XP Pro have the needed software to set up a simple home network and have any of you successfully done this. I am looking for someone with experience in this as I have none concerning networks.

Thanks in advance for reading this. Please let me know if I have left out any important information.

XP Pro certainly has internal router software. You should probably run the network setup wizard, or you can setup the IP routes manually with the netsh command.

That one card probably shows multiple connections in the network connections screen (Control Panel > Network Connections). Run the network setup wizard and select the option that other computers will connect to it for internet.
