I was reading the Declaration of Independence today and was struck by a line it. A line that shows very clearly why abortion is wrong and should be illegal. here it is:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it

it says very clearly that life is an unalienable Right. by having an abortion, you are denying an unalienable right of that child. Now this may be where the whole "when does life begin" argument starts, but I am not sure. All I know is I see life as one of the unalienable rights, and I know that an abortion denys that right to someone, and once that first unalienable right is gone, so are the other two. So by killing a baby in an abortion, you deny all three unalienable rights laid out in the Declaration of Independence.

A valid point, if in fact life begins at conception, which is of course, the fundamental argument about abortion.

But the Decleration of Independence is really nothing more then just that. It doesn't carry weight to our constitutional system.

What about the woman's unalienable rights? Does the rights of a fetus override the rights of a woman? Well considering women actually lost the right to vote on the foundation of this government, they probably weren't thinking of them either.

Really if you want to take this document literally, they only really mean men.

how is not allowing a woman to get an abortion infringing on her rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? I am assuming they go in ordr of importance, so the babys right to life is more important then a womans right to not be hampered by dirty diapers and midnight feedings.

All this abortion debate gets old very quickly. First you get to know what everyone else thinks about it, so you find allies and enemies on the subject, and proceed to convince the enemies they are wrong. But after countless arguments you find yourself repeating the same thing and the enemy is not convinced, then you realize it's just fundamental difference of belief and you can't change anything about it by repeating the same arguments over and over and over again.

To me it's only interesting to see how everyone thinks of it. The argument part turns boring too quickly. But keep at it Trav, just report how many people you managed to convert from pro abortion to anti abortion every so often because I'd like to know.

I thought I made it clear that there are parts that interest me and there are parts that are boring--the "express person opinion" part is interesting, so I'd still come to the thread and read. The convincing the other side they are wrong part is what's boring ONLY when you reach the point where you start repeating yourself.

I agree with you that this threads may become quite predictable.

BTW Travh you sure have changed your mind about death penaly in the process ;)
