who here has seen this? i think the movie was let down.
i'm posting this because i was disappointed, and i need to vent..

(there is a short GM at the end, if you would prefer to skip the boring bits)

i've been waiting months for the new harry potter to appear in a theatre near me, and literally had to beg for enough change to pay my way in, and damn..

the damn thing was made for adults, not kids. i know this to be true - first because it bored me to tears, and secondly because shortly after aunt marge got herself blown up, and the knight bus ride was over, the younger portion of the audience started to squirm. they talked, they took trips to the bathroom in droves, they swung on their seats. they were as bored as i was.

well over half the audience was my own age, and as far as i could tell they were not there with kids, they were there by themselves. they laughed, and flinched, in the right places, and they seemed to like it.

the first two movies had a real story line. they began at the beginning, and sure, they had to take a few shortcuts, compared to the books, but they drew you in, and the magic unfolded. by the time you got to the end you were as sorry to be leaving as harry was.

this farce took more than a few shortcuts - it threw everything out, then pulled in a few vignettes to sketch out the plot, vaguely. even knowing the book almost by heart, as i do, it was difficult to follow.

cuaron traded the real magic of hogwarts - the story itself - for special effects. magic is not lupin turning into a werewolf, or sirus into a dog, or endless scenes of dementors flying around dramatically storm wracked skies.

dementors do not even fly, mr cuaron, they glide. if you had bothered to read the book, at all, you might also have noticed that a patronus charm, conjured properly, takes a real form, and charges down the opponent - it is not a spotlight you can use for dramatic portraits.

yes, riding a hippogriff looks like fun, but did you have to take the scenic route? sure, the whomping willow packs quite a punch, but what point in studying it for minutes at a time? let alone treating us to not just the one, but two gratuitous incidents in which an unfortunate bird gets it's brains dashed out for passing too close.

cuaron - just in case you care - the kids in my audience were upset by that. they did not think it was funny, at all, and only a few of the adults laughed.

enough said, i suppose. damn, i am disappointed.

except for emma watson, she was looking kinda good, yaup.
who here likes emma.

Most reviews that praised the movie said one reason why it was good was actually because the new director stopped following the book down to details. You be the judge.

I thought the movie was decent, entertained me about the same level as the first two. And I read all the books. As for children not liking the movie, don't know, I didn't pay attention.

Yeah, I like Emma Watson.
