So now we have no messengers on our pc. Had to toss them all because we have had some kind of problem where when you try to open the browser or any program at all it takes (seriously) like 10 minutes before it opens. I don't know what it is that's happening. We've run avg on it as well as adaware and can't find anything that would do this, so the messengers went bye-bye for now. Maybe that's where it's coming from.

The only messenger server I know that will mess with your comp is AIM messenger...

msn and yahoo seem fine with me...although yahoo has it moments of not opening at times...but that is only for when messenging...

Which ones did you have on...? and has it gotten any better since...?
What browser do you use..?

When a new msn or yahoo messenger is available it will issue prompts to tell you to download the upgrade. If you disregard the prompts (not sure how many times) it will disable your messenger.

But of course, the real answer is get off Windows and start running Linux -- makes life so much easier. :D

I'm not sure it will, for those on the lesser end of the "technophilic knowledge" scale.

If you don't know how to work a command prompt, you simply cannot use Linux. End of story.

At the moment, for Linux, there is much to configuration and compiling to be done for the average user. You do gain a lot of stability and security, but you lose the convenience and newbie-friendliness of Windows.

I go way back with Linux, to the days when slackware was the king of the linux distros and you could load a complete usable OS on 20 megs of disc space. LOL

5 years ago I would have agreed with your post about the config stuff -- indeed a pain in the butt.

Nowadays, things are a little different. Take any of the modern distros, Suse, Mandrake, Red Hat (now Fedora) Debian ..... they load much easier. Actually, I've loaded Linux with less hassle than winders -- all those driver problems and such. Ugh ...

I run Fedora Core-1 and I guarantee you that a novice can load it from the 3 disc set without any help and when installed everything will be working. Play games, play mp3's and cd's, watch movies, burn cd's, rip, ftp, modem, graphics programs like 'The Gimp', programming languages, firewall et al ... working just fine with absolutely no setup.

Also, when surfing I don't have to worry about viruses, banners, dialups, popups, protecting my system from adware and snoops -- none of that crap -- it's all history.

They've come a long ways and that's why Europe, China, Japan, Canada and other countries are making it the OS of choice and most software vendors have to offer a Linux port if they want to do business internationally.

I hear Bill Gates will have a port of Linux in his next major release -- don't know if that means an emulator or if it actually has it's own kernel. Should be interesting.

But your point is taken. Linux needs to somehow shake their past reputation.

Just my 3 cents ... Dop

I'm not talking about Linux itself per se...more its programs.

I fiddled with Linux roughly a year ago, and pretty much every single program available on the Internet for Linux needed configuration and compilation before it could run. Not every program comes in RPM form. That's mostly what I was talking about.

why don't we just trash windows and go to the real OS to put all others to shame....MAC OS X!

Understand and I guess I've done so much compiling and installing of programs that it's 2nd nature to me where it would be overwhelming for a novice.

The good news is 'help is on the way'. Install for Linux progs will be much easier in the future as web sites are now starting to compile the progs (and the libraries -- DLL's for the windows folks) and offer them as executables. Not a good idea IMHO but it gets the job done quite easily.

Have a good one.

I HAD aol, msn (with plus), yahoo, excite and trillian. And my browser was ie6. No, I won't use mozilla, so don't even ask...lol B_V uses it and it drives me nuts. I've been using ie for way too long to switch now. hehe

Btw, we still have the problem. When I click on ie, it takes approx. 10 minutes before it opens. Same with any programs on our pc. REALLY annoying to say the least.

Well Dan, we just moved recently and he kinda blew out his back, so he hasn't been able to sit at the computer. Poor guy. It's been driving him nuts....lol Especially since we just started a new forum of our own right before we moved that he hasn't been able to do anything with.

Hopefully it won't be too much longer until he's up and at 'em. :)

Just a few things then...have you dumped all your internet files..cookies and stuff...?

When's the last time you defragmented...?

Are you up to date on your window updates...? IE updates...?

Mozilla is golden...I use that now all the time...IE crashes to much since they went to IE6...too many bugs were found AFTER they released it to the public...

If you have done all the above...then try this link...

http://www.tweakxp.com/

Little goodies in there that will help you speed up...

I am assuming you are on XP...

O yeah...is your new forum on your on harddrive or do you have your own server...? If your running it off your comp...it will slow you down ALOT...

Search for and download that, and run it. It sounds like you have a CoolWWWSearch virus of some sort.

Yep, that was the first thing I tried.

About a month and a 1/2 ago.

Are you up to date on your window updates...? IE updates...?
Yep. It's in the tray all the time and I think it installs something new like every other day or so.

Mozilla is golden...I use that now all the time...IE crashes to much since they went to IE6...too many bugs were found AFTER they released it to the public...
Lovely, didn't know that, but this problem started long after we got ie6.

I'm afraid to download anything like that now because our dsl was finally truned on this morning (YAY!) and I don't want to mess that up.

It's on a server. :)

I'm hoping that since the problem only arose when we first connected to the internet in the mornings that maybe it won't happen now that we are always connected. I don't know, we'll see. I would still like to know what it is though whether we get frozen up like that again or not. It can't be a good thing whatever it is.

I'll check into that as well as the http://www.tweakxp.com/ that imp mentioned. Have to talk to B_V first. :) Thanks for all the help everyone!

www.lavasoftusa.com : Download Ad-Aware.

Then use Mozilla like everyone's suggesting. :D
