Powell and Rice have lost all credibility and neither lies well under pressure. Also, the white male base would never allow an african american that close to the presidency -- on the sidelines is fine but not 2nd in command.

Rudy has too much moral baggage for the fundies to handle and he's not as well liked as one is led to believe -- even in NY.

McCain is the logical choice that would guarantee the election but the neocons would never trust him to keep the ship off the rocks. All that matters to them is the PNAC agenda to which MC doesn't subscribe. No loose cannons allowed -- count him out.

Ridge? Don't know if he would sell. Watching grass grow is more exciting than Ridge. Faithful to the core but adds nothing they don't already have -- count him out.

Frist? Obviously grooming him for a '08 run but he would have a hard time with the kitty-killer reputation and then there's his snuggness with the pharms and medical bunch -- count him out.

Elizabeth Dole? North Carolina which neutralizes Edwards -- worked for Nixon, worked for Reagan, worked for the Red Cross, is a humanitarian and has enough awards to cover a football field. Throw in she's a pretty lady and carrys herself well.
Hmmmm ....

WOW, I have personally met her, shes very together, I will always be keeping an eye on her next move ( speaking of moves, MOVE OVER HILLARY ) now she couldnt hold a candle to Elizabeth Dole, WHY ??.....all of the above (worked for Nixon, worked for Reagan, worked for the Red Cross, is a humanitarian and has enough awards to cover a football field. Throw in she's a pretty lady and carrys herself well).

Let me be serious for a sec -- McCain is the sure bet if Bush wants a guaraneed win in November. Bush/McCain would be a winner and I'd be the first to admit it.

Now, why it probably won't happen.

What's in it for MC? He hates Bush, Bush hates him, He likes Kerry, Kerry likes him. MC would have an instant open door to the Kerry white house where he could push his agenda -- something he hasn't had with Bush.

McCain would be expected to campaign against Kerry in the nasty fashion Bush used to campaign against him in S.Carolina etc and MC wouldn't do that to someone that's a friend.

He would never have the power that Cheney has *NEVER* and he knows that.

Then there's some of the gop base that don't like MC for whatever reason one of them being his almost anti-gun positions of late.

But bottom line -- if they can talk MC into it -- they have a winner.

You haven't mentioned the obvious reason why Bush won't drop Cheney from the ticket...Cheney wouldn't let him :D

Yep, you're absolutely right. Bush would just ignore McCain like he ignores Powell. Although you ask what's in it for McCain - he'd have a much better shot at the next Republican nomination, although I don't know if the Christian right would let that happen.

Lionel

Yep, the xtian right would have a problem with McCain in '08 -- another thing -- he would be in his 70's then (72?) and that might go against him.
