Nader, Dean to Debate if Ralph Should Run

1 hour, 19 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Among the debate topics: Should Ralph run for president? The participants: Howard Dean ( and a candidate who always has an opinion on the subject — independent Ralph Nader.

Dean, the former Democratic presidential hopeful who attracted legions of liberal followers before his bid fizzled out, will debate Nader for 90 minutes on July 9 before a studio audience.

National Public Radio's weekly program "Justice Talking" is sponsoring the debate, and correspondent Margot Adler will moderate.

Dean has been urging his supporters not to back Nader, but to stay within the Democratic fold and vote for John Kerry (news - web sites),

"I am anxious to debate Ralph Nader in order to speak about why he wants to run for president," Dean said in a statement. "This is the most important election in my lifetime and a third party candidate could make a difference — this November and for years to come."

Many Democrats blame Nader's last run for the presidency for stealing votes from Al Gore in the 2000 election. Nader says Democrats have only themselves to blame for losing.

"This is an opportunity to discuss how to reinvigorate our democracy by providing voters with more choices and voices rather than our anemic two party corporate duopoly," Nader said in a statement.

Dean is currently the honorary chair of Democracy for America, a political action committee dedicated to supporting and raising money for fiscally conservative, socially progressive candidates at all levels of government.

If I had my way, Governor Dean would be the one running for office, not John Kerry. Howard Dean is fiscally responsible, socially progressive, and had the integrity and energy that this country needs. I think it's a very good idea that he is going to debate Nader. Comments?

I just wonder how we got to the point in this Democracywhere running for president or voting for the person you think is the best candidate is considered a bad thing.

And that has happened, hasn't it.... fixing this will be harder than any other single governmental problem, I'll wager.

I don't understand why everybody hates Howard Dean. I was (and still am) a supporter of Governor Dean. He ran a good campaign that utilized the internet unlike any other in history. The average donation to his campaign was around $70, and it came from people, not special interests. He opposed the war in Iraq and had a platform of progressive social policies with a more moderate economic stance. He even had a REAL plan for universal health care. If Howard Dean was the nominee, he could beat Bush with both hands tied behind his back. Leave it to the democrats to screw it all up, giving Gov. Dean the finger after he gave a powerful speech that inspired and motivated his young supporters. Thanks to a beating from the media, the American people think Howard Dean is a nutcase. He is not a nutcase...he is a patriot that isn't afraid to speak his mind and I'm ashamed at the way he was treated by the Washington establishment! </rant>
