View Full Version : Why are people so afraid of Death?

Of all life forms on this earth, there is nothing here that does not eventually grow old and die. Plants, people, animals, insects... nothing stays here forever. Eventually all life that is here on earth must pass on. Seeing that as humans we all know this, why do we fear death? Is it because we have no sure way of knowing what becomes of us afterwards?

In order for us to have ever been born, we possibly had to have existed somewhere else first, another realm completely unknown to us right now in our present form. So surely when we leave this world, we may possibly find ourselves being spiritually transferred from this realm directly into another. Is it actually death that we all fear, or is it fear of the unknown that awaits us all afterwards?

Our ability to understand the process makes us fear it.
Sometimes intelligence is a bad thing.

I don't so much fear death as much as I fear the process of dying. Will it be painful? Will it be quick? Also, the though of what it would do to my loved ones concerns me as well. Of course I'm assuming they'd be upset. :D

Depends on how much money you leave them ;) I fear not being here, not existing and so on

I agree with Lionel, it's the fear of HOW it's going to happen, not the afterlife.

Sometimes I think, "I'd rather die of a heart attack, just BOOM, dead, than to suffer with cancer."

Then sometimes I think, "Nope, I'd rather die a long drawn out death so I have time to fix relationships or do things I always wanted to do that I never took the time for."

All I know is that I do not want to die in any of the below mentioned ways...

1. Murder
2. Fire
3. Drowning

Those all creep me out way too much.

I would rather not die but that is not an option.
I see death as a threat I can not control and that is the basis of my fear of it.

I know babe, but ya know what? You'll probably outlast me because I'm a worrier. Worriers don't live long because their nerves are shot and their hearts are not the greatest because of stress. You on the other hand deal with stress in a more productive manner. It doesn't cause you to freak out like me.
Believe me, you'll be around for a very long time hun. :) Besides, you HAVE to outlive me because I couldn't live on this earth without you.

Lets not discuss this, it gives me the creeps.
BY the way ask everyone here how I handle stress... Ask OD, LOL

I do not fear death. I have lived a very full life. There is not a lot of things that I wanted to do that I have not. I enjoy something about each day. I stop and smell the roses.
I am having the enjoyment of being married to my wife, my best friend in the whole world. I have seen my children's children.
My spirit will continue after my death because I expect it.

The only reason at least for me to fear death is that if I die I won't be able to do stuff I enjoy in this world anymore or spend time with people I like anymore. Or I won't be able to do those things I wanted to do but still haven't done, anymore.

I don't consider the fear of dying process the same kind of fear as the fear of death. Death is instantaneous, it occurs not one second before nor one second after itself. Dying is not, dying is a process.

I do fear the more painful or pathetic dying processes.
