I read the biography of LBJ a month or so ago - very interesting. You don't hear too much about that President these days but he had a very interesting life. Came from nothing - his family was far from wealthy.

Congressman, Senator, leader of the house, vice president & then president after JFK assasination and then landslide re-election followed by stepping aside 4 years later, then he died within a few years.

He made a fortune owning radio & TV stations while in the senate (his wife ran the companies). Actually his wife Ladybird had some money left to her from her parents.

Given he was a southern politician - he achieved much in the way of civil rights. He pushed through the landmark 1964 civil rights bill.

The list of his achievements is incredible.

In the end he was overshadowed by Vietnam and this has become his legacy.

I view LBJ in two ways, one he was a man who said what he meant and two he was a man I wouldnt have trusted with a lollipop. But of course he was a politician and a career one at that.
I heard all the conspiracy theorist that say he or LadyBird were involved in the death of JFK. But I would tend to believe that he was most likely just waiting for JFK to leave office so he could run again.
He was accussed of bugging Nixons plane and admitted it prior to his death. So as I said back then and I say now only difference between Watergate and other campaign decisions is that Nixon got caught bugging the HQ of a man who had no chance of ever winning the election.
LBJ was a mans man but a bastard in the political arena.

Here is a good picture of LBJ from his first run for public office.
He was democrat when both parties actualy had issues that they stood for. I miss watching the old nominating conventions and hear a real platform or a resounding, " The Great State of Florida cast all votes for The President of The United States, Lyndon Baines Johnson"
I guess I was younger and was still thrilled by the political process.
I guess the thrill is truly gone.

LBJ was quite a man and Lady Bird seemed very strong willed.
I remember that President Johnson did quite a bit of secret conversation recording.
I think he was in the J.Edger catagory of amassing infor on advesaries.

Yes what a rare individual LBJ was, Read were he would hold meetings while sitting on his cummode, fart outloud right in public, eat right off someone elses plate, One close aid said not one sentence ever came from his mouth that curse words weren't riddled thru the sentence. One close aid said LBJ had the largest scrotum sack of any man ever or at least any he had ever seen !! I thought Id roll over on that one .
