I like 'em both, but I have to give the nod to Tolkein.

Not in the same class. Rowling's work is good, but Tolkien created the genre. Tolkiens work spans lifetimes of his characters, maintains ties and blood lines, so I would say that Tolkien would be the better of the two.
But the best author in my humble opinion is Edgar A. Poe..........

Is it really possible and even relevant to classify authors to llok for "the best" ? I don't think so.
How can one compare Shakespeare and Chester Himes, or Vargas Llosa and Stephen King ?
It depends on you and what you like better at a time.
I've been a SF fan for years, but when I tried to read again Lovecraft or Asimov I found theme rather boring.
My favorites authors at this time include Jim Harrison, John Fante and austrian writer Leo Perutz. Oh, yes, and Orwell. But maybe Borges would be my all-times favorite.

Astra it is relevant, with a poor author there is little chance for a good book.
The style of the author makes the book either a good read or a tangle of pages.
Yes you can compare authors of the classics to modern day. The only difference is the language of the times.
So to talk about a great book without discussing the author is futile. They are linked.

Without a doubt my favorite books are Stephen King books, for some reason they are the only books I can realy get into and read. I have a lot of interests from Sports to Politics but most books not written by Stephen King are slow and boring. The only other book I enjoyed has Been Michael Savages "The Enemy Within' and the "Savage Nation" great political books. But If im looking for a story to get involved in its definelty Stephen King Books!

BV, maybe i was not very clear… Of course it is possible to compare autors and books, I just meant it dos not really make sense to say "this book is the best in history !"
