Yep, he's right. While I think it's always been present, I think that the Newt Gingrich/contract with America crowd sent it into overdrive.

i agree with daschle. politics is nasty more often than not but this is a pretty bad era nonetheless. i think we can trace the roots of this recent spot of meanness back to 9/11. after the initial shock and sadness wore off, there was a new atmosphere of fear that hadn't existed before which made people particularly angry about politics.

I think the seeds were sown when Republicans shut congress down and during the Monica Lewinsky scandal and Clinton's lying repeatedly to the American public about it. Then with the election mess in Florida it was exacerbated and has snowballed into the frenzy we have now.

I agree - but this is a democracy - so it's all fair.

If they overstep the lines - then there is always legal recourse.

The ugliness should be stopped though - they need more young female senators.

Nuke Isreal to stop the annoying bitching from both sides. Nuke Italy to get rid of the Pope. Nuke Mecca to get rid of the Islamics. Then we nuke North Korea and Bejing. Which is followed by the simutanous nuking of Pat Robertson's house and Washington DC... Oh, and nuke that fault that's in California to make it break off and go visit Hawaii.

Oh, since somebody spoke out on the "Startling meanness", now they should speak out on the "Obvious meaningless".
