The top brass has to go. Rummy will stay and Bush will walk around with his head up his gazoo as usual, as Cheney points him in the next direction he has to take. Meyers is getting little criticism from the media.. althought one military magazine will come out tomorrow asking for his resignation. The man is scum....

I do not think Meyers is scum. That said I think that both Rummy and Meyers should step down in face of this current scandal. I think both men are excellent at their positions however they bear the ultimate responsibility for the actions of our military in Iraq. They did the planning, they decided what troops would go where, and even if they were unaware of what was going on it still happened on their watch under their command. The same goes for General Janice Karpinski who was the commander at Abu Ghraib during these attrocities. And as forthe soldiers that complain they were given no direction...that's a cop out if there ever was one. I am not in the military and I know enough not to mistreat prisoners.

Here's the link to the article about the military magazines asking for Rumsefeld and Meyers to step down. Anyone opposed to this can argue with them....

Little wonder that General "we don't do body counts" Franks retired. He saw this coming.

I agree Republican...heads MUST roll for this. What a disgrace to the good people in our military. I think Rummy was biding his time, hoping he could corral and contain the whole thing without scandal...but you snooze, you lose. And to think that Bush said that he has done a "superb" job. LMAO!! Bush wouldn't know a "superb" job if it bit him in the ass.

There's really no question that Rummy should go. Why is he still in his job?

Problem is Bush can't make too many decisions on his own and he is comfortable with Rummy. To have him leave will leave Bush in a bad spot.

I think the defense department would be in a bad spot were Rummy to leave...however a dismissal of this magnitude would have strong reverberations throughout the US and the world. Ones in which I cannot help but think would be a positive boost for the President. Noone would be able to second guess that Bush was not doing something about it and for all inent and purposes would silence his critics on the matter.

You know...I'm flip flopping on this. While I think Rummy's leaving would be a message to the world, - my fear is that a) Wolfowitz would step in, and that would be far worse for the country. and b) that the Kerry campaign would lose a good football to kick around. Nasty me....

I doubt Bush will get rid of Rummy, although he should. as skipper said, it gives the kerry campaign really good fuel, and being thge liberal bitch I am, there's always that upside to Buh's disgusting politics.

I don't think Rummy should be fired per say - I think he should make a statement along the lines of

'In the interests of the US it is my deepest regret that I have decided to step down from my position. God Bless America'

I agree Drew. I also think that the President should address the nation about this. To make it very clear to the American people and the world his position, appologize to those that were degraded, speak about what punishment/investigations are happening, and send a clear message that this type of behavior is not to be expected of US servicemen & women. I would bring up the attrocities in Faluja of the 4 Americans burned, mutilated, and hung in public, and explain those are deplorable actions but not a means for us to seek retribution.

Falluja incident regarding the 4 US "contracters" happened on March 31st of 2004.

Many of the more brutal prison abuses, including the photo's we are seeing were from october to december of 2003.
