Serious Pollution Blocks Blue Sky in Beijing

BEIJING - Although the weather in Beijing is already warm this spring, Beijing is still plagued by a gray haze of by air pollution. Since April this year, there have been only six days with a clear blue sky, and the number of days with gray overcast weather has already exceeded the total days with gray overcast weather for all of last year.

As a result, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Environmental Protection called an urgent meeting. It was decided that the air pollution problem should be monitored in Beijing 24 hours a day.
According to the environmental experts, Beijing has experienced three dust storms since spring began. After April 8, Beijing has been dominated by a warm air mass, and lacks clean air from the north. The floating pollutant particles in the air are increasing and have made the sky dull and gray, and have greatly affected visibility. There is no quick solution to the problem.

In order to meet all of the environmental targets by 2008 and keep the promise of 227 days with blue sky this year, Beijing Municipal Bureau of Environmental Protection decided today to start to put the sources of heavy pollution like dust at construction sites, exhaust emissions of vehicles and industrial pollution under 24 hour air quality monitoring.
