Serious Pollution ˇV One-Third Water Species Vanish in Yellow River
According to the Yellow River Water Resource Protective Agency of China, one-third of the sixteen aquatic species that formerly lived in the Yellow River basin area have vanished over the last decade due to pollution.
Experts in Yellow River Water Resource Protection Program indicated that the Yellow River was very clean in the 1950s. There were a lot of fish jumping in the river. However, nowadays the entire river is filled with waste and produces an ugly smell. Fish and shrimp can no longer live in the Yellow River.
The famous carp from Rock River and the ˇ§John Doryˇ¨ fish from Yi River are no longer available due to pollution. In the 1970s, people lived along both banks of the Wei River. Fishing was their way of life. Now, the only thing still available are oysters. However, these oysters cannot be consumed. The oysters have an aroma like kerosene.
Experts have warned that fish in the Yellow River downstream are dying out, in terms of both quantity and species. This is directly caused by pollution. Accordingly, the total amount of wastewater draining into the yellow River has reached a high of 42 billion cubic meters (one cubic meter is equal to 264.2 US gallons)- the wastewater drainage has doubled since the 1980s. This has overloaded the Yellow Riverˇ¦s self-cleaning capacity. The environment of the Yellow River basin area has thus has been completely ruined.
