When I was in Viet Nam, our "pets" were a lizard that cried "fuck you" (not exactly, but the cry was close enough to those words) and a bird that lived in the same general vicinity who's call was "re - up" (again, close enough for translation to english). At times, the 2 would get in a sequence that always elicited comments: "re - up" ..... "fuck you" calls would go back & forth for some length of time. Re - up,(for those not familiar with the term) is short for re-enlistment in the military ..... hence the joke.
