Sir, I would like to start a psychology topic called "Permission to Feel Power". This topic would be to explore the relationship between a persons permission to feel power and the psychological well being of a person. Should this topic be placed under science or under chat? I am not sure what studies of been done on this subject. Or if psychology is actually considered science. Input please. acaveyogi

Or if psychology is actually considered science.

It's a social science which has various theories explaining this or that (ah, good ol' Sigmud Freud) but much of it is just that -- theories.

For example, according to evolution theorists, phobias are extreme fears that are almost "programmed" into person after person, generation after generation, which span over thousands of years (thus the evolution aspect), and are meant as a psychological protection device which purpose is to preserve human life. Yet according to psychoanalysts (who emphasize that early childhood experiences influence a person later in life via the unconscious), phobias are actually intense feelings (say a woman hated her mother as a child) which are unconsciously channeled into a fear of something different and often times seemingly irrational (say the woman now has a phobia of spiders).

So yeah, psychology is science, but it's considered a soft science because not much is based on hard fact. Physics on the other hand, is a hard science.

There is a science to psychology, and it is hard to master. Tough to be in the mental health field and be as rigid in one's thinking as the stereotypical PhD graduate of a more widely recognized hard science might be, and yet maintain their own sanity.
