What the title of this thread is is irrefutable. I found an interesting (if somewhat hysterical and possibly false) web site on the topic: www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net

Geez Borg,
I remember them saying as much during the 70's oil crisis.

Yeah they did, and that is part of the reason I am skeptical about that site. But trust me, oil is a finite resource that will run out someday. We need to start preparing for that day.

We need to get started on making more oil. Let's start by putting stupid people in a big pit and waiting for them to turn into oil ala the dinosaurs.

we can make oil and have/are doing it. The new Hummer runs of oil made from corn. Corn can also make a high octane gas for cars. So unless the corn crop is in trouble the resourses are there it's just a matter of how the politicians can regulate what will happen.

I just went into the site and read some, way down this guy claims that when we run out of fuel the world population will go down to about 500 million. We are at 6.5 billion right now before we run out of fuel there will be alot more humans, 9-12 billion. Where do some of these people get there ideas? Now if the oil just ran out with no notice then maybe we would loose 6 billion fast. But... humans love to invent and when something becomes a shortage we always find away to invent something to fill the old things spot.

The problem with ethanol is that it has less energy per unit than gasoline and it costs a lot more to manufacture. The only reason it's even a slightly viable option at the moment is federal subsidies.

Lol, and if you think the Corn Belt is a large swathe of land now, wait 'til you replace fossil fuel with corn fuel....You'll have the everglades turned into corn pastures.

I was just throughing out ideas, there are other resources. What about solar, etc... Lets also not forget that at one time we had leaded gas for are cars and everyone said "well that will never change". Times change, resources change, and people change right along with everything else.
Leper;
I know of 1,000nds of acres right here in NY that use to be farms that just as easily could become farms again.

Oh yes, no doubt a few thousand acres in NY would be plenty. I tell you what, get me some numbers on how many acres of corn it would take to fuel an average vehicle for one year on corn fuel and then we'll talk.

I didn't say NY would solve the problem I was just saying that there is alot of unused farm land ALL over this country.
www.al-corn.com This is just one site of many, if you really are interested you can do a search.

The day that the world runs out of petro oil keeps getting pushed further and further back due to remarkable improvements in technology that allow more oil to be discovered. Of course the world's oil supply is finite, and someday we will run out, but gentlemen, we will not see it happen in our lifetimes.

Not even, potentially, my lifetime?

Okay, maybe you! I have read reports (I work for a large oil and gasoline company) that show pretty conclusive data that predict petroleum oil discoveries to increase un-drilled reserves to their highest levels.....not now...not in 10 years....but in 50 years, at least.
I wouldn't worry too much about replacing gasoline yet. You could argue replacing gasoline for environmental purposes a lot easier than you can for purposes of it running out. In that light, it is probably more feasable to take a wait and see approach on this issue.

Guys there is so much oil out there that it is scary. There is oil under Paris. What we are playing now with here, is the most perfect oil and the rich folks that are pumping it. Mostly the rich folks that are pumping it. The price of a barrel of crude is a fragle thing. So fragile that it is easy to manipulate. But they have reasons. Very good reasons why the price of gasoline goes up. The Jewish folk have diamonds and the oil folk have oil. If you had a sugar Daddy, wouldn't you hang on to it? When it comes to the worlds natural resources, science knows where it is at. They just do. You and I are dealing with information that is twenty-five years old. Do you realize that farmers can be told everything about about their fields and I am talking everything, if they subscribe to the US govenments satellite system. And what they are using is obsolete technology. The satellite system will tell you how to steer your tractor and and exactly how much fertilizer, seed, water to put on any given area of the field that you are working on. Your rows will be perfect and your nutrients will be perfect. The gold mining companies in the State of Washington know exactly where the gold is and how much is there in any given local. Yes the US government should know what is burried in Iraq, but stuff can be shielded. Nature is not shielded. Science now knows, the question is who is funding science. And do you and I really want to be involved. Oh yes that is just US, you should see what the French have! :) But you do have to be the highest bidder. acaveyogi

Martian oil might be interesting. Whale oil use to be. The truth is Mars was like Earth when Earth was forming. acaveyogi
