For anyone who hasn't heard, this news broke about a week ago, and here's the blurb from today's Darkhorizons:

"Akira: The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Warner Bros. and Director Stephen Norrington are teaming up to do a Western genre adaptation of the Japanese sci-fi anime classic "Akira". The original 1988 feature (based on a famed comic novel) focussed on a group of motorcycle-riding teens in a post-Apocalyptic Tokyo trying to stop a renegade of theirs who became telekinetic through a Government experiment. Jon Peters will produce the new US version which Norrington says "preserves the tone, the visual and the epic scope of the original whilst telling a somewhat more accessible story (to Western audiences)". "

Now, just in case you didn't catch that last part, lemme quote it again:

"whilst telling a somewhat more accessible story (to Western audiences)"."

So basically, Mr. Norrington is saying that they're going to dumb the plot all the way down to the level of something like The Matrix so that every slack-jawed idiot in America can "enjoy" it. Am I the only one who thinks that this may very well be ONE OF THE WORST IDEAS HOLLYWOOD HAS COME UP WITH, LIKE, EVER?!?!?! Discuss.

yes it will suck, but after the live action Fist Of The North Star, do you expect different? Hollywood can't leave classics alone.
