Do you think all the marches in honor of MLK's birthday are neccessary?

I think it's a great honor for his birthday to be a national holiday, but I don't see the need for all the marches. He was a great man, indeed, but I think his birthday should be celebrated in churches, and not marches.

Why? He is widely regarded as the leader of the black civil rights movement, and did amazing things for the advancement of blacks to equal status. I think that's enough to warrant marches on your birthday.

Well Borg, his struggles in the civil rights movement are unforgettable, but the marches seem to cause racial tensions with the whites in a lot of places. This is probably due to the fact that there are still so much hatred for the black, so why stir it up?

I, for one, think King was one of the greatest men that ever lived.

I can't remember any time I've ever seen stories of racial tensions caused by MLK marches.

Neither have I. Could you give examples?

Well, I'm only familiar with local boos, but that's enough to know there's tension. I don't know of any real physical violence...only tension. I just thought there might be boos everywhere that usually stay local. I'm really glad to know that there's not tension everywhere, but I'm sorta on the edge of racial territory.

In a lot of ways, the racial divide in this country seems wider than it was 40 years ago.

ES I agree some days it seems as though we are going backwards instead of forward.

I think if MLK knew what has happened in this country concerning both blacks and whites he'd crawl out of his grave and bury himself in Canada.
