I'm not country music lover... but I respect it as a popular music genre. What confuses me is how country music is not.. well.. country anymore.
I watched 2 videos on the country music channel (not a big sample, i know), but it was quite telling. I saw a Kenny Chesney video.. who seems to be more of a beach bum than a cowboy. He wears Abercrombie clothes with a cowboy hat... and sings about the beach. That's not very "down and dirty"...
Next on was Keith Urban, who I had never heard or listened to. He had electronic beats, electric guitar, and pretty much sang the standard "3 doors down" type of song. He had makeup on, his video was in an art studio, and had abercrombie yuppy chicks in it. Whatever happened to country being country?

it has it's place. and it's not about a sound, it's about the attitude. Marty Stuart don't wear no hat, but he's country to the bone.

I love country, but I lean more towards the older stuff. I do enjoy Kenny Chesney... Can't say I've ever seen a video of his but I think he has a great voice.

Country has become country/pop, a crossover type music.
True country never had drums. The music consisted of a guitar, a mandolin, a dobro, a steel guitar, a banjo, a concertina, a bass, or a combination of these.

That's very true, Frogger. I would say that I like true country more than country pop, but both are good.

Well I grew up in a country music loving family! All except for me that is. I can't really stomach country music much. I respect people like Johnny Cash,Willy Nelson and Patsy Cline but can only take so much of it. I like some rock/pop bands that have a country influence like the Eagles. I think the Eagles influenced a lot of today's country. Unfortuanatley not for the better though. My sister has a cd of all Eagle songs covered by various country artist. I don't care for it though. I love Rock and Roll!!!

I don't like country. It all sounds the same and is about the same thing--pickup trucks, women gone wrong, hunting dogs that meet a sad end, taverns, and beer. "Don't the girls all get prettier at closing time?"
There was one country song I liked. It was called Lone Star Beer and came out sometime in the late 1970's, I think. It actually had a beat to it and a catchy tune.
I like bluegrass but that's not country.

country is probably the most predictable music out there.. like rendova said, the lyrical content is shallow

Actually country music is anything but shallow. Old time country was the music of the people who had been left behind during the American boom times following the World Wars. It sings of hard times, lost hopes and a general feeling of malaise. If you take the time to listen to it you will find it has a pretty profound message.
an
Listen to, "Here Stands The Glass" and you c hear the deep dispair and loneliness. Listen to, "Four Walls", or, "The Window Up Above", and you can feel the heart ache.

You want to hear heartache, listen to country. You want to hear something that actually evokes heartache, listen to the Beatles' Eleanor Rigby.

Ain't nobody who sings about heartache like Hank Williams.

man..i hate country. Yes the words are good and about real human emotion. I just don't like the sound of it. Hurts my ears. If I hear it accidently, I go into convulsions (ok just kidding on that), but I can't stand listening to it. I don't know why. But, I am NOT writing it off as "bad" music. Its just that I don't get it. I blame myself. :)

Like I said, its probably me. Alot of people never listened to Rap until EMINEM came along. I guess he made it OK for "some" white people to listen to rap. ( i know many of you will argue this, but its the truth whether you want to believe it or not). I don't blame them since Rap was/is/could be associated with crime, inner city issues, whores, guns, gangsta life, etc.
I guess for me country music (FOR ME) is associated with other things wrong with America. I know its me and like I said I blame myself.
