I noticed a Service Unavailable message for a few day's and then all of a sudden Allforums was back alive and already had some posters present. So was not everyone affected?

Ya, they were probably cleaning the forum up or making some changes or they fell aslep and forgot to hit the "ON" button. :p

Everyone was affected. The server was down. I contacted DrewM, the owner of the site, approximately two hours ago via e-mail. Happily, he saw my e-mail right away and rebooted the server.

I would have e-mailed him sooner but I'm using a relatively new computer since the hard drive on my old one died, and I didn't have an e-mail address for him in my new machine. Sorry about the delay, but hopefully it won't happen again.

Vile,

May I suggest that you make sure you have everyone's email address so that if something lke this, or even something worse happens you can email people with undates or even the URL of a new site if necessary. I would hate to lose all the acquaintances I have here.

I have never stated otherwise. But I have long been of the opinion that Windows is unfit to be a server OS. It's getting better, though, now that it has a halfway decent CLI.

Compared to FreeBSD? There's no reason for anyone to be using a Microsoft OS to run a server, unless you desperately need ASP or .NET stuff.

You didn't say FreeBSD is better as a webserver than windows2003 - you said "windows is unfit to be a webserver" - which is patent crap. Windows is a very stable webserver & you have to use windows for .net & to have a serious database like SQL server. Now - when it comes to php & mysql windows is not the best choice, but that has nothing to do with windows being unfit to be a webserver - that was just you talking out yr ass.

BorgHunter

Windows is a very stable webserver
It can be, sometimes. It's a crapshoot, though. FreeBSD is far more reliably stable, and doesn't require a reboot with every security update that comes around, only the kernel updates.
& you have to use windows ... to have a serious database like SQL server.
You don't consider PostgreSQL serious? It's probably the best database system around.

Its called a memory leak, I not a pro either and i could even be wrong in my post but thats what I think it is. The process needed to cycle but need to wait until all the connections closed. A guru would open a new process or reboot the server.

Memory leaks occur when applications fail to free memory before they close or are killed. I'm not sure what you're talking about; TCP/IP connections are supposed to time out eventually.

Sometimes I wonder if the trans Atlantic lines have been disrupted when I get the 'Service Inavailable' header.

I freely admit I know shit about how this stuff works, but I have a question.

Is there any one terminal or geographical place that all AF traffic has to go thru.

If so, is that were the problem arises.

your using application pools and the processes in them need to cycle. I'm not a big fan but I know that. Try some microsoft tutorials that is why I remember.

PS I guess i was thinking to many open processes (memory leak) and not open sockets OK

Thanks

The AF server is in a datacenter in Dallas (no it's not in my closet). The "server not available" happens when IIS has stopped (the webserver on the PC - all web servers are just a PC). The PC itself is still running fine when that happens. The reason for IIS stopping? who knows? - I think to be honest it's related to attempts to hack the server, for certain attacks IIS stops. A decent hardware firewall would stop all that - but that would be overkill for AF. To answer the question on if it's too much traffic - the answer is no. The server could easily handle 1000x as much traffic as AF gets without even straining. AF is very cheap to keep alive - the server is about $150 a month (it also has a couple of other minor things on it like a mail server for one of my email addresses and a helpdesk for another site I own).

To contrast that to say a real hosting setup - my main business - the hosting for that site is many servers in their own rack (in a Houston datacenter) & > $2000 a month in hosting costs. AF is just a fun low cost thing & the hosting reflects that - so sometimes the server says "unavailable" - if I notice it it takes 2 seconds to fix. The problem looks worse when the site is down for 2 days (it took me 2 days to be aware of it the other day - after an email to let me know)

Shouldn't it be possible to set up a script, either on the Allforums server or somewhere else, that polls the site x times per day to check for a service unavailable message, and if it gets one, either sends you an email or automagically reboots IIS?

Sure - it would be, but somebody sending me an email (or calling - Vile has my number) seems like far less effort dont you think? Plus - the site might go a year without that happening.

Overall, Allforums is quite reliable. In fact, lately, AF has been out performing Yahoo which as far as I can tell has more than it's share of downtime. I give AF a high B+.

As a side note ... I once worked as a perl programmer for a company that considered it's software and services so mission critical that 5 seconds of downtime per year was considered unacceptable which led me to ask if that means 4 seconds per year IS acceptable. I didn't work there long.
