I'm not sure what's the best part - the pops and cracks or the horribly compressed audio.

It never really went away. Alot of small privately owned record stores carry vinyl and cassettes. When I worked for an electronic repair company we were always getting turntables in for repair cause people wanted to listen to their records.
Can't agree on the sound though,I remember what alot of my parents albums and my old cassettes sound like compared to CD's and I think the CD's sound far better, much clearer.

It's "warmer" sounding, because of the way they mixed them back in the day. Not fuller, though, because records and tapes can't reproduce the highs and lows the way CDs do, so you're missing a lot of the sound. And, again, there's the hiss and pops.
