What was your favorite summer time activity as a kid and what is it now?

I grew up where I live now and we lived in farm country so we were always outside playing every summer. Out the door by 8 and back home for dinner to go back out and play until it was dark. If it was super hot we'd go swimming or turn our neighbors front yard into a slip and slide with all the tarp we could find in their barn.

I grew up in the suburbs of Indy. Swimming, playing outside as late as I could get a way with and counting out pennies to get slushies at Diary Queen were the highlights. The slushies were 10 cents at that time.

Lord, I had it tough when I was a kid/teenager in the summertime.

We slept in until eleven AM and then headed to the pool or the lake.
Where we spent the entire day--all day, every day.

My only worry or care was my suntan and getting a new bikini or did my new shades match my new sandals.

In the evenings we'd goof around with friends or my cousins--riding bikes, walking to Dairy Queen, going on car rides with those old enough to have a license, staying up late to watch scary movies.

I'd give up my entire bank account to relive one week of those idyllic summer days once again.

Then > playing hide-n-seek and going to the beach

Now > feeding and watching the wildlife in my backyard and riding my Harley

And of course, Happy Hour is good too

Take a week off from being the little librarian, tell the kids they have to fend for themselves, and your ol man he's on his own.
Dont think you'll hear any complaints from them either.

Send the check to.........

You know, that's the best advice I've heard in years.

Where is it written that, just because we're older, all we're good for is to pay bills, paint the house, take the dog to the vet, and grocery shop?

Heh, I was the 4th grade jump rope champion as well as the neighborhood hopscotch champ. (I still have my lucky hopscotch rock).

I'll bet I can STILL whip all comers in those 2 events, lol. Can throw a wicked frisbee too. If ya don't hear from me for a while, I'm off to the lake again.

I use to play a mean game of volleyball in jr high, but I can't move that fast any more. Did you ever use a chinese jump rope.

As a kid:

There were four of us on my street and we were pretty enterprising.
Somewhere we got the bug to build forts out of picnic tables for sleep outs. Keep in mind these structures would take up to ten tables & benches. We would usually get some old painters tarps to wrap it in. Many an innocent and many more not so innocent nights were spent in these three to four story contraptions. (Mrs Mitchell, yes I swear that was her name, that lived on the next street down from us. She didn't have any curtains of shades on her small bathroom window. Perhaps she always thought it was too small to deal with. Joey's father was a photographer and therefore had access to all kinds of large telephoto zoom lenses. Let's just say the small window gave a perfect view of the shower, she used a see thru curtain as well. Good times indeed. )

Now: Well just about anything I get to do with my kid & wife. Nothing quite so dangerous or devilish, but still pretty fun at least to me.

When I was a kid, in the summer we would get into all sorts of mischief... Things like having "sword fights" (hitting each other with sticks), building forts in the woods, swimming in the creek, lighting all sorts of things on fire, riding skateboards/bikes with no brakes down the biggest hill in the neighborhood....

Now my friends and I spend most of our time just "hanging out". But in a week we're all going camping and it's gonna be just like when I was younger... only probably with more booze. :D

EDIT: But there will still be a lot of lighting stuff on fire... that never gets old.
