McCain, Conservatives Clash On Immigration Once Again (http://www.thebulletin.us/site/index.cfm?newsid=19721593&BRD=2737&PAG=461&dept_id=576361&rfi=8)

After adjusting his immigration stance when his comprehensive immigration bill died last summer, John McCain, now with the Republican nomination in hand, has once again ruffled conservative feathers on the immigration issue by returning to the position that almost stopped his campaign dead in its tracks.

Mr. McCain joined California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger last week in supporting a "comprehensive" immigration plan that would address the problem "in a humane and compassionate fashion."

"Sen. [Edward] Kennedy and I tried very hard to get immigration reform, a comprehensive plan, through the Congress of the United States," Mr. McCain stated. "We must make it a top agenda item."

In terms of immigration, John McCain is accustomed to being on the outside of his party looking in. Prior to his second run at the White House, Mr. McCain earned a reputation as a contrarian by bucking his party's position on border security in favor of comprehensive immigration reform plans that favoring instant legal status for illegal aliens.

"Our nation's immigration system is broken," Mr. McCain stated in 2006. "And without comprehensive immigration reform, our nation's security will remain vulnerable. That is why we must act."

But the Arizona senator's staunch defense of such a comprehensive package at the expense of border security almost cost him the Republican nomination when in June 2007 an immigration bill he championed alongside Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) failed in the Senate. The grassroots revolt was not lost on a McCain camp left practically bankrupt, financially and politically, by the issue.

"I understand why you would call it a, quote, shift," Mr. McCain told reporters in November 2007 as he prepared for the GOP primary battle. "I say it is a lesson learned about what the American people's priorities are. And their priority is to secure the borders."

The Arizona senator did not abandon his commitment to temporary guest worker programs or and addressing the 12 million illegal aliens already present in the country.

But Mr. McCain's decision to reintroduce comprehensive immigration reform to the presidential debate after securing the GOP nomination has raised concerns the Arizona senator his returning to his amnesty roots.

"Put very simply: John McCain is a liar," argued prominent conservative activist John Hawkins. While Mr. Hawkins was always skeptical of Mr. McCain, he opted to support the Arizona senator after it appeared he won the nomination on the grounds a Democrat would be much worse. But Mr. Hawkins decided to rescind his support, raising the question of whether others will follow suit.

"John McCain's consistently weak position on illegal immigration and support for a 'comprehensive reform' is going to backfire with his Republican base in November," stated Michael Erickson, chairman of Republicans for the National Interest. "There are indications of growing support among conservative voters for the [Libertarian] Bob Barr candidacy and even though we may not see eye to eye with Mr. Barr on every issue, his strong stance on immigration is going to be very popular."

Mr. Erickson further noted Mr. McCain is scheduled to address the annual La Raza convention in July, making him the first Republican to do so. La Raza is a controversial Hispanic rights group criticized for its separationist sentiments and open border advocacy.

So mike your solution to this "mess" would be an immigration plan that is the opposite of humane and compassionate.

it's more humane and compassionate than any other country on earth. everywhere else you get thrown in jail for the 1st time you get caught sneaking in. here, it's a felony to reenter if deported, but it's never enforced.

Mcamnesty is a flat out liar on illegal immigration!

Mcamnesty changes his mind daily on immigration. I just can't play the game of "voting for the lesser of the evils" in this election. They are all equally evil. All 3 are open border advocates. I'm not voting for a Presidential candidate but will vote in the Congressional races. Only Congress can pass a amnesty anyway.

AMNESTIES JUST MAKE THE PROBLEM WORSE!

WHAT IS INSANITY?

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting differnet results.

Congress has passed 7 amnesties for illegal aliens, starting in 1986.

1. Immigration and Reform Control Act (IRCA), 1986: A blanket amnesty for some 2.7 million illegal aliens
2. Section 245(i) Amnesty, 1994: A temporary rolling amnesty for 578,000 illegal aliens
3. Section 245(i) Extension Amnesty, 1997: An extension of the rolling amnesty created in 1994
4. Nicaraguan Adjustment and Central American Relief Act (NACARA) Amnesty, 1997: An amnesty for close to one million illegal aliens from Central America
5. Haitian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act Amnesty (HRIFA), 1998: An amnesty for 125,000 illegal aliens from Haiti

6. Late Amnesty, 2000: An amnesty for some illegal aliens who claim they should have been amnestied under the 1986 IRCA amnesty, an estimated 400,000 illegal aliens
7. LIFE Act Amnesty, 2000: A reinstatement of the rolling Section 245(i) amnesty, an estimated 900,000 illegal aliens
8. Nine current bills are vying to be Amnesty No. 8

Attrition Through Enforcement Is the True Middle-ground Solution

President Bush and the rest of the open borders crowd constantly tell the American people that there are only two solutions to our nation's illegal alien crisis – give illegal aliens amnesty or round them up and deport them. This is a diversionary tactic to draw public attention away from the most effective and efficient solution – Attrition Through Enforcement.

The principle behind Attrition Through Enforcement is that living illegally in the United States will become more difficult and less satisfying over time when the government – at ALL LEVELS – enforces all of the laws already on the books. It is also imperative that the government with the full cooperation of the private sector, implements certain workplace enforcement measures. The goal is to make it extremely difficult for unauthorized persons to live and work in the United States. There is no need for taxpayers to watch the government spend billions of their dollars to round up and deport illegal aliens; they will buy their own bus or plane tickets back home if they can no longer earn a living here.

We know Attrition Through Enforcement will work because, until recently, it has been shown to work even with little or no enforcement. As it currently stands, almost 200,000 illegal aliens self-deport from the United States every year, but imagine how many more would leave if our government refused to award illegal aliens another amnesty, mandated all employers to verify a person’s eligibility to work here, cracked down on identity fraud, and enabled local police to easily transfer illegal aliens in their custody to the feds.

People Who Left the Ranks of Illegal Aliens in the Most Recent Year of Official Record*
183,000 Self-Deported
152,000 Amnestied (allowed to adjust to legal status within U.S.)
63,000 Removed by Federal Authorities
27,000 Died
456,000 Total

ROTFL.

Naturally.

Pretty much the only issue that I would come near agreeing with John McCain's position on, and the "real" Conservatives (his base) despise him for it.
