Bibles Burned… Christian Tolerance Prevails (http://sayanythingblog.com/entry/bibles_burned_christian_tolerance_prevails/)

Associated Press reports, (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,356723,00.html) via Fox News, some orthodox Jews in Israel burned hundreds of copies of the New Testament Bible last week.
JERUSALEM — Orthodox Jews have burned hundreds of New Testaments in the latest act of violence against Christian missionaries in Israel.
Uzi Aharon, the deputy mayor of the central Israeli town of Or Yehuda, says he got into a loudspeaker car last Thursday and urged people to turn over hundreds of New Testaments and missionary material recently distributed by missionaries.
The books were dumped into a pile and religious students set them afire in a lot near a synagogue, he said.
The Maariv newspaper reported Tuesday that hundreds of students took part in the book-burning.
What interests me isn’t the fact that the Bibles were burned, nor the fact that it was orthodox Jews, whose memories of “Kristallnacht (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kristallnacht)” are faded now, who did the burning.

No, what caught my attention is the fact that there were no mass riots reported across Christendom. No raging protesters marching in the streets waving placards demanding that the perpetrators of this sacrilege should be burned at the stake. No calls from Western governments for the destruction of Israel as a consequence of this horrific insult to Christianity, the Apostles, and St. Paul. No rioters rampaging through Rome, Ramstein, Rzeszow, Hrodna, Rouen, East Rutherford, Richmond, or Little Rock demanding the insult be avenged.

Dogma aside, there is a fundamental difference between the intolerant dictates of Islam, and Christians’ approach toward our fellow man. It is a difference well worth keeping in mind.

A Christian will not cut your head off for not believeing in his god, he lets his god do all the smiting.

Too bad the crazy half of the Muslim population wont do the same, and just let god sort them out.

You'd think that Jewish people would be the last people on earth to burn ANY book.

Book burning will ALWAYS remind me of one thing--the National Socialist German Worker's Party.

There are a lot of people who call themselves "Christian" but do not act the part. Just like in Islam.

That's really profound. I wonder why I never thought of that.

I think he was speaking in general, which he would be overwhelmingly correct.

dharm's a good guy, it took me a while to figure that out.

Shut up dharm!

dharm is not a good guy. dharm is an ass. The thread is about Ultra Orthodox Jews burning the New Testament and dharma has to pipe up with, 'some Christians don't act like Christians'.

There are a lot of people who call themselves "Christian" but do not act the part. Just like in Islam.Im sure. However, wtf does that have to do with the topic of this thread?

Evil Homer

The topic of this thread is that Christians are apparently more noble than Muslims because in this instance, Christians reacted calmly to an affront to their beliefs. Stupid argument anyway.

The topic of this thread is that Christians are apparently more noble than Muslims. no sir that is not even close to the topic of the thread, but keep trying...

Christians reacted calmly to an affront to their beliefs. . This was an instance where if the situation was reversed there would be bloodshed and alot of chaos. This doesn't mean Christan's are more noble at all. It just shows they are more tolerant, which is pretty much in the title of the thread.

Stupid argument anyway. Perhaps If you read the article with an open mind and not let the way the thread evolved, turn you off to the real meaning, you would have a better understanding of IMO was the point of the article.

Perhaps I took the meaning of the article a bit too harshly. Still, the basic assertion that Christians are more tolerant than Muslims is also false, and just as offensive. I find these shallow comparisons between these two rich and dynamic faiths to be intellectually repugnant.

i think it is true. Muslims are very intolerant. this was a good example.

dont get me wrong. i am definitely not part of the 'xtain cabal'. i dont have much use for religion these days.....if god wants to judge me,thats fine,,,as long as i can return the favor and judge him back.

iam just saying IMO Christan's are way more tolerant than Muslims, especially when it comes to an affront to their beliefs....

I agree with you on this. But, when I lived in Dubai for 2 years (remember UAE is a muslim country BY LAW!!), the malls and streets and offices were covered with Christmas decorations during Christmas times. There was even a Santa at all the malls for the kids to cry to.:D This in a staunchly muslim country.

But here in the "tolerant" USA, there is nothing during Ramadan.

LF, my quibble is that you're looking at the entire situation from one incident without any context. I'm not coherent enough to go in depth about it, and I've written a lot on this previously, so here's the short version.

1. Historically, Islam has been much more tolerant of alternate views than Christianity by vast orders.

2. The incident this article refers to about Muslims rioting was a (excessive) response to direct attempts to incite them.

3. There is a larger trend in the Muslim community towards increased orthodoxy because more and more Muslims perceive Islam to be under siege. Due to this, they grip tighter to the solid fundamentals of their faith. Shallow, uninformed comparisons like this do nothing to help the situation; in fact, it forms a vicious cycle.

I'll try and find the old posts at some point tomorrow.

Just my 3 cents.

The stores and malls there were just looking to make a buck.

Is Ramaden a gift -giving holiday?

If not, that would explain why little attention is paid to it here by the merchants.

Like I've said before... there's a lunatic fringe in every religion, and the Jews are no exception (we just don't hear about them that much because there's not very many of them).

As far as the Christian vs. Muslim thing, I agree wholeheartedly with Evil Homer. "Christians are more tolerant than Muslims" basically translates to "Christianity is better than Islam".

All organized religion eventually becomes corrupted. Whether by greed or percieved persecution.

Organized religion is just another way for humans to concentrate on our differences and keep us apart. It's a control at its best, a cult at its worst.

It's ironic because nearly every major religion in the world focuses on the "oneness" of mankind. Go figure.
