I read CITR nearly 50 years ago and at that time it was indeed controversial. Considering society's attiitude in the 50's it's no real surprise that J.D. had the world upset with his main character (Caufield?) -- a depressed individual with his decaying life driven by sexual exploits, breakdowns and a general lack of concern for his own mental health.

Looking back today and I see a mind set that could only exist in those pollyanish, alice in wonderland, in the rabbit hole times that americans were so eager to embrace following the great depression and WW2 back-to-back.

Had they taken time to remove their protective shells and open their minds, they may have judged this book as one of the greatest works of all times, it's content notwithstanding.

i read that in english class last year. i loved it, but i remember a girl in my class saying she hated it because holden caufield was so lost, dishonest, and off-track that it fustrated her. i thought that was interesting.
