this is just the latest (http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5hSj-m5gXHhlKOCm5OMrMkZKeVfzA).
while recent First Ladies have had anti-drug campaigns, literacy, and bimbo eruptions as their pet projects, Laura has been on Burma's case like white on rice.

I don't remember her saying much when they were slaughtering Buddhist monks. She might have, but I don't remember reading about it if she did.

Fuck it...they don't want outside help,so be it. Why the heck should we help a country that doesn't want it?
Asked whether she worried that US aid might not reach Myanmar's people, Laura Bush replied: "I'm worried that they won't even accept US aid."

You would think being a tiny country would make that government want to keep their people alive.

This was at the end of last year, about 6-7 months ago. The buddhist monks were leading protests against the military dictatorship that controls the country and the riot police came out and slaughtered them (http://gatewaypundit.blogspot.com/2007/10/mass-slaughter-in-burma-hundreds-maybe.html). That link has some pretty graphic pictures and videos of the slaughter that were posted by a Burmese blogger.

On the surface, I have a tendency to agree your reasoning here, Mike, but when it really comes down to it, who fucking cares? I mean, seriously! We help people all the time, and what does it get us? Jack Shit. We're resented and hated the world over, so as far as I'm concerned, everyone can feast on our Johnson for all I care.
Of course, the other reason I'm apathetic is because I can't help feeling these people are responsible for their government, so if they really want things to change, then it sounds to me like a good, old fashioned coup de tat is in order.

I agree Prae,I ask myself and sometimes my dad when we talk about this kind of stuff, why do we continue to help these countries when they don't want the help, won't return the favor to us if we needed it,and like you said will shit on us 20 times over. And yet here we are once again bailing another country out because they got rammed in the ass by Mother Nature. Did another country send help when N.O was hit by Katrina? What about when the West Coast is burned,do we get help from other countries?
I think we need to put a lock on the pocketbook of America and start taking care of our own and tell everyone else to go to hell.

Did another country send help when N.O was hit by Katrina?
For the record, yes, many countries did offer to send help. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/04/28/AR2007042801113.html)
The author makes a good point:
Help is being offered - in a fast news world we sometimes think it's not happening if we don't hear about it.
"The State Department (http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L0472355.htm) or country officials have said offers of help been received from:
Afghanistan, Australia, Austria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Belgium, Canada, China, Columbia, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Germany, Guatemala, Greece, Guyana, Honduras, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Paraguay, Philippines, Portugal, South Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom [Note: includes Great Britian, see first list above], the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela.
Of course, the Bush administration turned down most of them. (http://www2.nysun.com/article/53433)
We got the same kind of offers after 9-11 so it is perfectly reasonable to assume that we get them during particularly bad wildfires too.

The United States is in a unique position in the world. Being the only superpower, and only nation with the finance and ability to overcome the logistical problems these countries face.
If ya dont wanna help them-fine. A somewhat Republican outlook no doubt, but just think, the Burmese people are not to blame here.

We don't usually need help from other countries. That would be like you or me helping Bill Gates with his medical expenses.
I think we need to put a lock on the pocketbook of America and start taking care of our own and tell everyone else to go to hell. That's mostly a moral issue, not too different from the question of giving charity. However, there's a practical side to it as well -- the better off the rest of the world is, the better off WE are.

Burmese people are not to blame BUT their government is (not elected)! Been there... it is a really sad, poor, country due to their government! Their military government controls EVERYTHING! The US has no POWER there, financial or otherwise.
It is not a matter of Republicans not supporting them! It is a matter of these people not having any say in their life! This is not the US... these folks don't have a say!
If you've been there, like I have, you would understand these folks are just struggling to survive. Politics mean nothing to them... food, water, etc. does...
The US is a non-entity... they are worlds apart!

LOL - nonsense, they're flying overhead MANY different areas in Asia right now, guaranteed. I think we have 4 (or so) up at any given time, 24 hrs a day. My dad used to pilot one in the late '60's. ;)

Well I thought they were all parked out in the desert somewhere.
Seeing yer giving away military Intelligence here-why are they flying around Asia.
Are they looking for somewhere to park ?

Well I thought they were all parked out in the desert somewhere.
Nah, the B-52 is incredible. There's nothing else quite like it; it carries 70,000 lbs in bombs, and with 'em, it can easily erase entire civilizations. It'll be in service (with the highly advanced, crazy-expensive B2, that is) 'til something like 2035.
Seeing yer giving away military Intelligence here-why are they flying around Asia.
They're everywhere, Paul, and they have been since the early '60's. This is nothing new.
Are they looking for somewhere to park ?
They don't need to; a KC-135 refuels 'em at 35,000 feet.

I have to say that as weapons go, the 52 is impressive.

Ya know, such a plane designed to do what it does, has never been surpassed.
Why dont they simply pull the blueprints outta the drawer and build some fresh ones ?

they just update and rebuild the ones they have, like they do with the M1 Abrams series main battle tank. better engines, new avionics, and the such.

So basically, sending any kind of financial help is going to supply their military and not the people.
The Military controls the country and anything that comes in. Anyone can try to by-pass this but it won't work.
We met doctors while there who went through the jungle to supply health care. IF they were caught, they'd be shot.
Americans have no idea of how lucky they are... walking down the street, etc., for basic necessities... these people hide, crawl, not to be seen...

My dad is a missionary and he told me about going to Haiti, its the same way as Burma. You have to go thru the govt. to get to the people.
He went with a group from his church, had to hike thru the woods, and they used pliers to remove teeth at a clinic. :@@:
I adopted a boy from Haiti, Nespy, which my dad had met but he broke his leg and was moved to another village for care. His family hasn't seen him again but I'll still send the money for rice and such to them and cross my fingers they get it.
