ATTENTION! Kentucky Durby filly Eight Bells has just been injured. She was lying on the track and an ambulance was contacted. Both right ankles were fractured and she was put to sleep. Vets say there was no chance of her survival.

Eight Bells was only Three years old! Her first Durby and she had to be put to sleep. Horses will run until they kill themselves. They have been taught to do what they have been trained. She gave it her all until the end but OH WELL. At least someone made some money off of her!:@@:

The fillys raced are not fully grown. Their legs are not matured or stable enough to compete! It is unfair to the horses but all their owners want is money. Poor Eight Bells was only THree. THREE and had to be put to sleep, because of the careless decision to race her.

It's so sad.. I asked my folks why they are so quick to kill off these animals. Humans live without legs, even if the horse can never run, or can't walk for years, I don't think it's fair to just kill them because they have broken legs. Unless there is something I don't know about horses, legs can be healed. Hell, they could even make prosthetics for them probably, or a wheel system or SOMETHING other than death.

Leaving a horse with broken legs can lead to diseases and infection that end in death. That is why I do not agree with racing them this young. I think prosthetic legs are a lovely idea. Unfortunatley, one of the greatest, Barbaro, is gone and it's too late for either of them.

You can heal the horse at great expense to the owner in some but not all cases. Some of the horses would probably hurt themselves even worse without constant care and supervision while mending. Some other horses would probably go insane for lack of a better word. Horses are very emotional animals and are just not meant to be laid up.

Add to that the fact that horses weigh so much that nothing is for sure when rehabbing a leg injury.

Well then why don't we just euthanize humans who "don't look so good" and need "a lot of work"... fuck it, just kill them. It's not worth all the work. That's basically why they killed that horse.

Now I recently found out that horse's have blood that runs through their bones, and they have a very different anatomy.. but come on. At least TRY.

I voted for the third option.

Fillies , no matter how strong, are not as strong as colts. Most cannot run that distance. I remember the tragedy that befell Ruffian several years back.
Fillies should only race other fillies and at the shorter distances, IMO.

Ruffian was an amazing horse! won every race she ever ran, didn't she?
