Please show me where I have been "complaining". People like you and Evil Homer have attempted to tell me how to spend what money I do have (which makes me the condescending one?) and I tried to explain that I'm not making enough money to be able to defend donations rationally. Why don't you mind your own fucking business, hmm? Maybe if you spent your time studying history instead of telling other people what to do, you wouldn't be so goddamn ignorant?
My question was to DF in the first place!! Why the fuck did you answer it? I asked her how she knows this stuff. Not you, you dumbfuck!

The two scenarios aren't mutually exclusive, Havok.
What i meant is trivial knowlegde becomes a lot less important and prominent the further removed from studies we are.

Oddly enough, unless your in a profession ya studied for in particular, I think school curriculum is becoming out of touch with modern living.
After Maths and English, the rest ya can live without,as on job training is provided.

As proven in Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?
You're absolutely right, HaVoK. It's not that we necessarily forget trivial things we learned in school... but our brains get so full of more pressing matters like keeping a job and paying our bills and raising our kids, those thoughts take center stage and the other stuff gets pushed back.
Like Einstein said, ""Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school."

Very true, to a degree. Unfortunately, it matters not. A formal education, while inevitably outdated by technology, is still a crucial part of getting your foot in the door, so it really doesn't matter how important YOU think it is. Employers want to see the drive in prospective applicants, and that piece of paper, as trivial as it may seem to you, represents their desire to work. Of course, one can always reconcile themselves to mediocrity, and mix cement for a living, but who the fuck wants to do that? I don't know about you, but I'd call 'em losers.

I don't know Prae, I think there's something to be said for blue collar work. School is highly overrated these days - any chimp can get a diploma (I wish I could offer some former classmates, who passed, as exhibits). Not to mention, as cleverly demonstrated in the time tested classic movie, Office Space, working outdoors can be a nice alternative to being jammed in an office all day.
I wouldn't say "loser" per se; I would say "to each his own" until I knew more about the person.

Wow. What an absolutely fair assessment of "blue collar work".
FWIW, i know plenty of blue collar workers who have degrees. They chose the line of work for various reasons.
I do know the type Prae is talking about though. The ones who have no choice in what type work they do, and then do nothing to make the best of the situation they have found themselves in. I would certainly classify those type of people as losers.

Nixon lost to Kennedy in 1960 and then went on to win in '68. It was a close race though.
as i recall, it was the slimmest margin in the 20th century, and i doubt JFK would have carried IL if he hadn't gotten 120% of the vote in Chicago.
not quite a pantsing.

as with every other strange place-you're generally ok as long as you stick to the main roads, and off the side streets.
and if the street sign says "Martin Luther King Blvd", you might want to reconsider your route.

I agree. I've cleaned a lot of hotel toilets in my time, and I never once thought of the job or myself as less or more than any other job/person. It was work, steady honest work, with all the benefits I could stand and then some. And I was good at it. The raises and promotions came with that.
Cleaning hotel rooms is actually a pretty good job, but I don't expect anyone who hasn't done it themselves to think otherwise. Because, you know, it's "loser" work. I'll say this, my stress level was zero with that job, and stress is the number one destroyer of body and mind. *

Because you pretty much worked alone right? Every hotel maid I've ever seen has been alone. Not having someone yapping in my ear the whole day would be a blessing.

You got it!
You get your room assignments and off you go. Once in awhile a houseman will come along and unload the dirty laundry from the cart, or a supervisor will stop by to see how many rooms can be turned in to the front desk, or to ask you to do a specific room next because guests are waiting, but for the most part, you're on your own.
Bliss!

i've actually considered doing that sort of thing. but i really like being outside myself.
a lot of things i do don't make a lot of money. or it is far and few between. but i am satisfied with what i do. one thing is pruning fruit trees for people who don't know how to do it properly, don't have time for it, or just physically can't do it. i feel as if i am responsible for the health and production of those trees for the rest of my life. no stress. but i like to see the trees in bloom or producing a good crop of fruit.
one thing i wish i could get over is the overpowering urge to literally kick the dog snot out of little superiority attitude shits in the world who think flipping burgers, cutting grass, or mopping floors is beneath them. and they ain't even rich. just spoiled brats.

Oh yeah. There was the time one of my maids (I was a supervisor by this time) wouldn't go into Clint Eastwood's room to clean it because there was a .... Well, let's just say I cleaned the room myself to save everyone some embarrassment and sent Mina off to do George Montgomery's room where we found.... uh...
Ok, so I know some stuff about what some people do in their hotel rooms that the media would love to get hold of, and just leave it at that.

I hear that...I was so happy when my old boss asked me to go on contract and work from home. I hated trying to get my work done and have everyone waltzing in and out of my office asking stupid questions or thinking I could just yak the day away because I was in an office.

During more than thirty years teaching and adminstering in schools I have had a great deal of contact with black students. Some of my worst students were black, but some of my best students were also black. I could usually tell what the parents would be like by how the students acted. The parents of those students, both black and white who were attentive in class, tried their best to learn and were not disruptive were interested in education and saw to it that their children did their homework. The parents of disruptive children almost invariably had a chip on their shoulder, they blamed the school for their child's difficulty and constantly made excuses. They did not see that their children did their homework, did not go over their tests with them, did not support the teacher or the school. Of course there were exceptions but this was the way it generally worked.
Yes, many black kids do not value education and think that their peers who actually do value it are "acting white". This is not because they are black though. It is because they were raised in a setting that did not value education.
