Ok, this article is disturbing...

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080410/us_nm/cuba_usa_migration_dc;_ylt=AsOx2El5_156FEI8.TcVlEE WIr0F

"Even more Cubans try to reach the United States through Mexico. Last year, 11,486 undocumented Cubans arrived at U.S. Southwest Customs and Border Patrol land ports. So far this fiscal year, which began on October 1, some 5,500 have done so."

HOW is the American taxpayer suppose to pay for all this?

It is past time we close down this border. Deport ALL of them, now.

It is already illegal in this country to employ them. Make it illegal to house them or support them (i.e. take tax exempt status away from any organization that supports them).

Then, and only then, might they follow the rules.

When they enter LEGALLY... then they are entitlted to support themselves just like every other American.

I'm pretty sure that according to the law, once a Cuban touches American soil, they're here legally. Or at least they get automatic political asylum, which means they're legal in short order. Honestly, the Cuban expats, whatever one thinks of them, tend to take care of each other. I really doubt they're a drain on the government. And ultimately, as long as the Cubans remain a huge voting block in a very important state, neither party's going to do a damn thing to piss them off.

I had heard the same thing about Cuban's when I lived in Miami,if they can make it to US land they can stay.
They do tend open shops and run gas stations and a majority of them work their asses off. I have no problem with them as long as they continue to make their Cuban sandwhiches. :o

I believe you are correct on Cuban's touching American soil... I'm drawing a blank on it right now but there is actually a name for it.

Unfortunately what you say is too true about them being a major voting block but I'm not so sure about the drain on the government/taxpayer.

The point of the article though is that the unchecked Mexican border is allowing them and others into this country illegally.

So much for homeland security... can't get here by plane but if you can make it to Mexico you can walk in... there in lies the problem...

I'm not worried about the Cubans specifically, but nomad is right about the problem it points out.

Cuba is a beautiful island, from what I can gather, must be, hundreds of thousands of Canadians and Europeans holiday there every year.

Question: Are Cubans still taken by the hand by the Feds if they make it to the keys ?

if they're intercepted at sea, they get tossed back to Cuba. if they make it to dry land, they get to stay.

It's called Wet Foot-Dry Foot.

As soon as they touch American soil they are eligible for political asylum.

Why don't you just lift the Embargo on Cuba instead of pretending how much you like Cuban's?

OH I forgot the Cuban money in your banks that was siezed; you can not return money you don't have.

Brilliant, CanadianReader,

Our non-recognition of Cuba is based on a palty sum of money. And the moon is made of green cheese.

Actually lifting the embargo would harm the Communist regime more than keeping it in place.
At present they can live under a siege type atmosphere, open things up and
allow Cuban civilians to see what the real world is like, they wont be long getten rid of them.

I agree that we should have lifted the embargo long ago, Paul. The embargo is kept in place for purely political reasons. It has nothing to do with money we owe Cuba. If anything Cuba owes the U.S. money for things they nationalized.

They are a holdover from a time when Communist Dictatorships were considered a bad thing, instead of a source of cheap labor as Communist Dictatorships are seen today.
