as oil prices go up i am willing to hazard a guess that the future of appalachia and west virginia looks kind of bleak. socially, environmentally, economically.
we see more ads on tv now touting clean coal. clean? what about the mess that the coal companies have left behind up to date? ruined streams from acid mine drainage. ruined communities from rape and run tactics where the land, water, and economy is RUINED. coal companies NEVER paying their fair share of taxes. roads turned to shit, no clean water to drink, no jobs.
why does the people of west virginia and appalachia allow this? when will the coal companies start paying their fair share? when will they stop destroying for the short term profit? when are they going to start cleaning up after themselves?
they do not pay for it. ever. this leaves a heavy tax burden on the people here, and any business' that try to stay. and the government has to raise taxes on the business' that stay and the people. and people wonder why business and people don't want to stay?
personally i don't blame every single person here if they picked up a gun and start shooting.

Is this a sign that we should be picking up on? Are you crying out for help?

I would hate to have missed a sign and some innocent people get killed.

primitive man ~The best solution is to shame people for selfish acts like you described.
Put shame on the people who trample on rights and poison this land and water.

ooooooooooooooo......................
the people can start voting these jackass' who have run the state for far too long out and replace them.
one day........
i remember seeing a joke map once where west virginia was categorize as communist. i don't think so. very capitalistic by what has been done here for far too long. time for the coal companies to start cleaning up what they did in the past, and start keeping it clean, and start paying their fair share instead of putting the burden on the people and the business' that remain here.

In the past coal companies strip mined, left huge slag heaps and allowed runoff to enter local waterways. They operated with no restraints or constraints. They were finally forced to restore the areas they mined to at least a semblance of their original state.
If future minining operations are more closely regulated and if strip mining is banned I see no problem with reinvigorating the West Virginia coal operations.

right now they are pushing heavily to make mountain top removal the norm and to keep it. mountain top removal is 10 times worse than strip mining.
deep shaft mining has its problems. mainly destroyed aquifers, and acid mine drainage killing streams and rivers.
friends of coal tries to tout how they are "good" by lieing to people with job statistics. go to coal country where it is done and all you see is poverty, minimum wage jobs and fucked up environment. and the coal companies get away with murder.
before they gear up for more and more coal in the future due to rising fuel prices, it has to be nipped in the bud now by raising the taxes on them to pay for their damage, future damage, job training, and infrastructure upkeep, health care. it is obvious they have gotten away with a pittance for far too long.

Well except for the shooting people remark. I have to agree with a lot of what you say. Having lived in this hell hole most of my life (WV), I've seen stupidity on an unbelievable scale. Still I hope no one starts shooting just yet? I would like to think most people have a little more sense than that.
