Canada gets ready for NAFTA fight
Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who last month warned the U.S. of the perils of reopening NAFTA. In response to pledges by Democratic presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to scrap the free trade agreement. That links Canada, the U.S. and Mexico if they could not negotiate significant changes to the pact.
There are some new efforts to convince Americans of the folly of re-opening the trade deal, signed in 1992. Because of the worrisome wave of protectionism that has been sweeping across the U.S. affecting opinions in Congress and among presidential candidates.
People with an interest in Canada-U.S economic relations should speak out, to talk to the people that are their partners in trade and investment," The U.S. political system is basically responding to grassroots misperceptions."
Americans tend to blame NAFTA for things that have nothing to do with the trade deal, such as the loss of jobs to China.
