So what is the purpose of super delegates and why do the democrats think they are a good idea? It sounds like a stupid idea to me, but i am not a democrat so I guess I can not see why having someone with a "super" vote should even exist.

In case the unwashed masses choose someone the illuminati thinks can't win.

SO the democrats don't trust their voters when it reall counts?

This is all really amusing, given that the thoroughly dishonest **We Don't Trust the Voters* assholes from the RightWing stole the 2000 election.

What's really amazing is that under nearly every type of recount various press and political organizations done the Democrats lost. An yet there are tools out there that still think the election was stolen.

Why is that?

Maybe they need to recount again

They're adorable. And what's more, they may have as much say in the nomination as a typical Democrat primary voter this year.

At least that way you know your taxes are going on military spending and invading other nations.

As for the TOPIC of this thread... i don't get why democrats have SUPER delegates who can vote against what the entire party thinks. Seems like the opportunity for an abuse of power. But then again, so is any delegate who doesn't cast their vote to the electoral college in agreement with what the people have said. Why don't republicans have "SUPER delegates".. or why do the democrats even need them?

The purpose of the superdelegates is the same as the purpose of the Vice President's position as tiebreaker in the Senate. Typically, their votes aren't called into play, as the Democratic nomination isn't usually contested by convention time. The Republicans don't need super-delegates because their winner-takes-all primary system eliminates the need for them.

Actually Republicans have the same basic concept but they call them "uncommitted delegates".

Some quick reading just told me that the Republicans also have superdelegates; they're the exact same thing as the Democratic superdelegates. They're just not referred to as such, nor are there quite as many of them.

Edit: You got there first dbum.
