View Full Version : The Thing About Urban Legend

It's my observation that there are a lot of people who hear urban legends and don't bother checking if it's true, they just broadcast it like crazy. And I am saying there is psychology involved in this behavior!

I think there is an excitement in telling people wild stuff that you didn't make up yourself for one thing. It gets people's attention and makes you seem interesting. And second, I think unconsciously many people would have liked it if these myths were actually true--it makes the world more fascinating.

What do you think? Do you always check the validity of some wild-sounding claim?

P.S. What prompts me to write this post, by the way, is from too many people telling me to watch the "Worm Comes Out Of Pork When You Pour Soda Over It" video.

Every minute I spend reading snopes makes me feel smarter but the world less fun. Which is kind of the point I was trying to make lol.

there are times that "wanting to believe" overrides what normally counts as common sense. the more you want to, the less likely you are to doubt.

That pork thing can be true. I was watching discovery and they were talking about worms that make their way to a persons brain.
Even though that in and of itself sounds like a urban legend.
In Mexico pig farmers feed the worms to their pigs, it helps to make the pigs bigger for some reason.
Anyway. The warms will settle into the pigs muscles where they reproduce.
Or something like that.
Then, when someone eats the pig (if it isnt cooked all the way through) the worms find their way to the persons brain. Then they kind of hang out and grow.
Turning into what looks like several tumors.

I seen it a while ago so I dont remember details.

Here.

Any kind of meat is dangerous if it's not cooked properly.

EDIT: And BTW, Snopes actually says that the "worms come out of pork when you pour coke on it" rumor is NOT true.

mad cow?

I've seen the video of the worms in the pork,it's gross but one has to wonder about whether the meat wasn't tainted already when this was done.

Good point.

But I was talking about tapeworms.

Once eggs are ingested, oncospheres hatch in the intestine, invade the intestinal wall, and migrate to striated muscles, as well as the brain,

It's my observation that there are a lot of people who hear urban legends and don't bother checking if it's true, they just broadcast it like crazy.

The problem is to identify a piece of news as a possible urban legend.
Do you ever check any piece of news you've heard, before telling it to a friend ?
